Translating Headstones

Hello,

 

I volunteer my time photographing headstones in a cemetery close by to where I live (a suburb of Vancouver, Canada).

 

I came across a great number of mixed Chinese and Japanese headstones. While some of them were written in whole or partially in the Latin character set, a great deal of them had no to very little Latin writing on them.

 

Unfortunately since most of the Japanese ones are written with a lot of kanji and very little hiragana or katakana, I am finding it quite difficult to tell them apart. I can tell certain ones like _IGP5749.jpg is Japanese with the hiragana.

 

But if I could get some help translating some of these, it would be great.

 

Any of the names that have an "a" before the ".jpg" is my attempt to reverse the colors and bring out the contrast to make them easier to read.

Not to take anything away from the helpfulness of this forum, but to my knowledge Vancouver has a huge Chinese community, with some suburbs being 50% ethnic Chinese. Have you considered reaching out to them? Some people in these communities will even know more background on these cemetaries and perhaps the people buried there.

I'll just give you a small hint, that Chinese tombstones overseas usually show the ancestral home, like IGP5805.jpg.

Another hint: you'll get a better response if you make it easier for people to help you, so renumber those photos in simple 1-2-3, cut any duplicate photos, show clickable thumbnails not blind links, and post half the photos this month and the rest next.

And many of your photos are very bad for reading the inscriptions easily. You need natural or artificial light from the side which will cast shadows to highlight the engravings.

The headstones marked with 大正 should all be Japanese as 大正 is the name of the period after the Meiji era. Those marked with 中華民國 or 民國 (Republic of China) are Chinese.

The names on 5717 are 西初雄, 西綾子 and 西口光雄 (Japanese).

The name on 5720 is 長曲部登 (Japanese).

The name on 5723 is 堂崎瀧次郎 (Japanese), who was a Buddhist monk with the religious name (釋）清願.

The name on 5725 is 太田榮藏 (Japanese).

The name on 5727 is 杉万央 (Japanese).

The name on 5729 is 櫻井アヤ子 (Japanese).

The name on 5731 is 三浦繁吉 (Japanese).

The name on 5737 is 千葉勇五郎 (Japanese).

One of the two names on 5741 is 土田愛次郎 (Japanese). This one belong to the Showa era, which was the period after 大正.

On 5743 is the name and location of a village in Japan - 岡山縣上房郡豐野村.

The name on 5744 is 松井豐 (Japanese)， who was a buddist monk with the religious name (釋)覺道.

5749 - 丸山みの (Japanese).

5751 - 劉富昭 (Chinese).

5754 - 鄭慶邦 (Chinese).

5761 - 林敏面 (Chinese).

5762 - 譚錦基 (Chinese).

5763 - 張明晃 (Chinese).

5765 - 林贊標 (Chinese).
