FlurZero Posted June 9, 2015 at 02:01 PM Report Posted June 9, 2015 at 02:01 PM I've lived in New Zealand my whole life and now I'm 16. I took Chinese for a long time when I was younger but never really paid attention, I mean who wants to learn a language they never use when they are 10 years old? My parents always told me I would regret it and now I do. I know how to speak fluently for basic communication purposes (as in I speak with my parents without trouble at home). but more complex things I won't know the meaning of. Also, I can only read/write at a basic level as well, as in (I don't have google pinyin installed right now) but I you can probably imagine. I'm going to university next year and I'm trying to find ways to improve my Chinese. Quote
anonymoose Posted June 9, 2015 at 03:14 PM Report Posted June 9, 2015 at 03:14 PM Well, since you are fluent in basic communication, I think that is already a massive benefit, at least compared with non-heritage learners. It think there aren't any tricks or shortcuts here. You just have to put in the time and effort. Start reading more - whatever you are interested in - current affairs, literature, or anything really. Practice makes perfect. Quote
陳德聰 Posted June 10, 2015 at 04:16 AM Report Posted June 10, 2015 at 04:16 AM My advice is start reading, listening, and watching more. You're still at an age where you at least live with your parents presumably, so watch Chinese TV with them. Ask them questions. You have them as a jackpot at this point because they will probably still feel glad you're interested in pursuing more Chinese. You just need to endure the nagging and "I told you so"s. Quote
simc Posted June 11, 2015 at 08:22 AM Report Posted June 11, 2015 at 08:22 AM Do you live in east Auckland? If you do, the Chinese New Settlers Migrant Trust offers targeted at local Chinese on Saturday at Howick Rec Centre. They also offer classes around Auckland.(I used to go to the most advanced one they offer at Howick, but Saturday morning wasn't convenient for me.) Quote
