Hi all! Recently, my teacher recommended the Chinese film,  青春派 to me and while watching it the extract "交女朋友的事。" caught my attention. The subtitles read "Girlfriend? Not a chance." I was wondering if someone asked me, "Do you think computers have any advantages towards study?" Could I say 好处的事。(Advantages? Not a chance)

No. I guess the original script and the translation didn't correspond directly.

Could you please tell me what does "交女朋友的事" really mean?

It's clumsy in English, but it means "something having to do with looking for a girlfriend." Sounds very natural in Chinese.

Xiao Wang has been looking for a girlfriend for almost two years. He has done all manner of things to aid in his quest. He's gotten a new kind of haircut, bought new clothes and has posted his profile on a dating site.

"Why did you get a new haircut, Xiao Wang?" one of his best friends asked.

"Oh, it was just a "交女朋友的事。Not sure if it will really help."

“我告诉你。交女朋友的事。想都别想。” This is the full extract said by the actress. So I guess it translates to, "I tell you. Something having to do with looking for a girlfriend. Don't even think about it." Based off what you said abcdefg,I'm guessing you could say “我告诉你。好处友的事。想都别想。“ If someone asked me, "Do you think computers have any advantages towards study?"

No. That doesn't work. Someone else will have to explain why. I'm not enough of a grammarian.

The language you are using as a template is idiomatic and situational. Cannot extrapolate from it like you are attempting.

Furthermore, "好处友的事" is not a phrase anyone would say. Does not make sense.

Perhaps a loose translation of "交女朋友的事 might be, something to attract a girlfriend.

事 means "matter". It is just a shorter version of 事情. So 交女朋友的事 means "the matter of getting a girlfriend". Of course, you can't always translate word for word between English and Chinese. In the context given, I'd say a better translation would be something like, "As for getting a girlfriend". Then the complete sentence would be, "I tell you, as for getting a girlfriend, forget it!".

What is the role of 交女朋友的事 here? It sets the topic for the subsequent comment "forget it".

So you can see, your second example doesn't make sense. 好处的事 would mean "the matter of advantages", but the topic isn't just "advantages", but whether computers have advantages. You could conceivably say 电脑有没有好处的事.

Agree with anonymoose, it's "the matter of getting a girlfriend", not "something having to do with looking for a girlfriend".

“好处的事” sounds weird, doesn't collocate well. I guess you could simply say “好处嘛,想都别想!”

Yes, I also prefer the Anonymoose version.
