markcarter Posted July 13, 2015 at 04:49 AM Report Posted July 13, 2015 at 04:49 AM Greetings! I'm delighted to announce our brand new Chinese learning tool for Android (5.0 Lollipop and higher) devices: Hanping Chinese Popup A green/white “handle” hovers on top of all of your apps and, when you place it next to a Chinese word, you are presented with a popup showing not only the pronunciation and definition, but also buttons allowing you to: copy-to-clipboard, play audio, and star (add to favorites). Furthermore, the app uses OCR technology, so even works with images (for example scanned documents, photos, or images in websites) and can be used to read text in e-books where text selection/copy is not available. For a higher res video please see: YouTube or youku. The key advantage of Hanping Popup is that you don’t need to leave whichever app you are currently using. In the past, you would have to either take an awkward screenshot (then run it through an OCR app) or hope that the app allows you to select the text and then maybe use something like Hanping's Clipboard Monitoring Notification system. This new way is especially helpful for instant messaging when you need to understand the Chinese as quickly as possible. Supports Simplified, Traditional, Pinyin and Zhuyin. Also supports Cantonese but only if you also have our Hanping Cantonese Dictionary app (a paid app) installed. Currently, only horizontal text is supported. Vertical text support will be added in a future update. Hanping Chinese Popup is available on Google Play Store and Amazon Appstore where you can also find additional information. 2 Quote
vellocet Posted July 14, 2015 at 01:08 AM Report Posted July 14, 2015 at 01:08 AM Android 5? That's unfortunate. I just bought a new Xiaomi 4 phone and it's Android 4, and isn't likely to be upgraded to 5 anytime soon. The software looks great but I won't be able to use it. Quote
markcarter Posted July 14, 2015 at 01:32 AM Author Report Posted July 14, 2015 at 01:32 AM Earlier versions of Android sadly don't have the technical capabilities for such an app to exist. If they did, then we would have built this earlier. I'd be surprised if the Mi4 is not upgraded to Lollipop in the next few months. Let's hope I'm not surprised! Quote
Hofmann Posted July 14, 2015 at 02:59 AM Report Posted July 14, 2015 at 02:59 AM What keeps you from making it recognize text? Quote
markcarter Posted July 14, 2015 at 03:14 AM Author Report Posted July 14, 2015 at 03:14 AM We already have an OCR app (Hanping Camera) that covers earlier versions of Android. The new app takes advantage of 5.0 (Lollipop)'s programmatic screen recording/capture feature. Quote
markcarter Posted August 17, 2015 at 08:32 AM Author Report Posted August 17, 2015 at 08:32 AM Just updated the promo video (see the OP with updated animated GIF as well as YouTube and youku links), so I hope this gives everyone a clearer understanding of how this app works and how it can be super-useful to them! studychinese Posted August 17, 2015 at 11:05 PM Report Posted August 17, 2015 at 11:05 PM Ironically I just downgraded from Lollipop to Kitkat a few days ago. I purchased it anyway. Will use it when I have lollipop Quote
