roddy Posted July 19, 2015 at 11:59 AM Report Posted July 19, 2015 at 11:59 AM Not if you're putting the tones on. I googled a bit, and apparently GB3259-89, Article 5.9, allows certain 'misspellings' of placenames (see footnote 7), but I can't find GB3259-89 online to see if there are any others. Quote
somethingfunny Posted July 19, 2015 at 12:12 PM Report Posted July 19, 2015 at 12:12 PM Yeah, I'd be interested to know what misspellings are allowed. Stuff like Peking and Tsinghua really get my goat. Admittedly for things like the universities or Tsingtao for the beer, its going to come down to brand recognition, but its still annoying. I was in a hotel bar recently and asked for a beer and the Chinese guy behind the bar said "Yeah, you want a Tsingtao?" pronounced like its spelt there, all a mess of t's and s's. Quote
Lu Posted July 19, 2015 at 02:14 PM Report Posted July 19, 2015 at 02:14 PM I don't mind the grandfathered-in spellings like Tsingtao, but it would annoy me if people then pronounce it as it is spelled instead of as it is pronounced. I had a friend in Taipei who lived on 和平东路, usually spelled as Hoping East Road. That's fine, freedom of transliteration and all, but she pronounced it 'Hoping' as in 'I'm hoping for good weather tomorrow'. Or a lady surnamed 黄 who had opted to transcribe her name as Hawang. I suppose she had her reasons. But then my Taiwanese colleague, seeing this creative spelling, asked: 'I wonder how you pronounce that?' Well, exactly like the character of course. Oh I can do this all day. Few things drive me up the wall as much as transliteration :-) Quote
roddy Posted August 11, 2015 at 02:27 PM Report Posted August 11, 2015 at 02:27 PM I emailed Pinyin.info, as they didn't seem to have anything about this. They got back with this: http://www.pinyin.info/readings/yin_binyong/p12_r_suffix.pdf 3 Quote
