Guest123 Posted August 12, 2015 at 06:58 AM Report Posted August 12, 2015 at 06:58 AM I was reading a text about a 摄影师. Dictionary says it's "photographer / cameraman"... Well, these are two different professions, aren't they? Then the text says he studied in 电影学院, so he must be a cameraman..? But then it mentions 图片摄影 - what does that mean? 图片 must be a photograph, not a video. And 拍摄, does it mean taking photos or filming (dictionary again gives both meanings!)? Can anybody tell me what it's all about? Thanks!! Quote
dwq Posted August 12, 2015 at 07:48 AM Report Posted August 12, 2015 at 07:48 AM 攝影 has both meanings, similar to how a "camera" in English can be a photo camera or a video camera. And it is certainly possible for a video cameramen to take photos, perhaps to study composition or such...? 拍攝 is just a more formal way of saying 拍, which can be 拍照 or 拍電影. When I hear it, I'd tend towards thinking filming, but it can be used for photography as well (e.g. 拍攝一輯相片). I do consider photographer and cameraman two different professions, it is just that they're both casually referred as 攝影師. If I really want to make a distinction, I suppose I could say 電影攝影師 or such, but it is usually clear from the context. Oh, just remembered the term 攝影家, which is primarily used for photo artists, although some of them do take video as well. Quote

Lu Posted August 12, 2015 at 09:51 AM Report Posted August 12, 2015 at 09:51 AM Just be careful when you hire one. I think this is the word I stumbled on one time: I asked the company for a photographer, they sent a proposal with a 摄影师, I thought all was well and when I got to the event I found a cameraman. Fortunately he could also take pictures. Quote
Silent Posted August 13, 2015 at 10:19 AM Report Posted August 13, 2015 at 10:19 AM Then the text says he studied in 电影学院, so he must be a cameraman..? It's just the name of the university, doesn't say anything about the subject studied. Dictionary says it's "photographer / cameraman"... Well, these are two different professions, aren't they? We consider them different, but I'm not sure they really are that different. Both operate a camera. In the root they are the same and require mostly the same skillsets (technical camera operation, composition, lighting). Classical, projected film is even just a number of pictures projected one after another. Quote
