abcdefg Posted August 26, 2015 at 06:12 AM Report Share Posted August 26, 2015 at 06:12 AM Does anyone know how to say cashier's check in Chinese? MDBG dictionary gives 现金支票 but I would like to verify. (They don't speak English at my bank.) I would be obtaining it at BOC. Here's their English information page on the subject. http://www.boc.cn/en/cbservice/cncb6/cb61/200811/t20081112_1324233.html I think 现金支票 is probably correct, based on this: http://srh.bankofchina.com/search/sitesearch/index.jsp (Latest versions of Firefox no longer supports the Perapera Add-On, and I am crippled without it.) Bloody embarrassing. Thanks. This is about their tool no longer working: http://www.perapera.org/
gato Posted August 26, 2015 at 06:48 AM Report Share Posted August 26, 2015 at 06:48 AM It should be 银行本票. The money is drawn from the bank's own account, which guarantees that the money is available. 支票 is paid out of your own account. The money may or may not be there. http://www.boc.cn/cbservice/cncb6/cb61/200811/t20081112_10048.html

Shelley Posted August 26, 2015 at 09:56 AM Report Share Posted August 26, 2015 at 09:56 AM I installed SOBA talking popup translator addon. Its ok, it works but I don't like it as much as Perapera, but it will do till they fix it. I emailed them and the reply I got was basically the same as the notice on their website but also that they are fixing it but firefox can be slow at accepting updates.
abcdefg Posted August 26, 2015 at 12:45 PM Author Report Share Posted August 26, 2015 at 12:45 PM I think I will start a new thread in the computing sub-forum to get other ideas on what to do until Perapera and Firefox arrange some marriage counseling and get their issues resolved. Each one seems to blame the other.
abcdefg Posted September 1, 2015 at 02:55 AM Author Report Share Posted September 1, 2015 at 02:55 AM Went to the bank this morning and the teller said what I needed was 银行汇票。Seemed rather unfamiliar with the whole process; had to consult a manual and talk with a senior colleague or supervisor. Didn't recognize 银行本票 even though I had it written out. I didn't complete the transaction; told her I would think it over. Perhaps I just got a new teller and will have better luck next time. I tried to clarify what I wanted by adding But that only added to the confusion. This is the VIP section of the largest BOC in Kunming, and they don't have an English speaker on staff. (Maybe one is hidden away in a back room; I didn't carry out a vigorous search.) Gato, any thoughts on how the 汇票 might differ? Think it would get the job done? What I want to do is send money to a friend in the US without executing a wire transfer. Want to just messenger a check via FedEx, EMS or similar track-able express shipping method. Will send it in US Dollars; he can cash it at his bank.
gato Posted September 1, 2015 at 04:53 AM Report Share Posted September 1, 2015 at 04:53 AM You didn't mention before that the check would be cashed in the US. In that case, why not just a wire transfer? It would be much simpler, and the transfer would reach your friend's account within 24 hours. abcdefg Posted September 1, 2015 at 10:34 AM Author Report Share Posted September 1, 2015 at 10:34 AM Cannot do a wire transfer for complex legal reasons that are important to the recipient. Have to send a physical check. (Sorry, but I cannot explain the situation more fully here on the forum. Nothing shady or illegal, just 有点复杂。)
imron Posted September 2, 2015 at 02:45 AM Report Share Posted September 2, 2015 at 02:45 AM With the massive increase in electronic surveillance (both commercial and governmental) that has happened in recent years, it's understandable that some people would choose to stay off the grid in order to opt out of all that. Nothing wrong with that, but it'll definitely become more and more difficult to do.
abcdefg Posted September 2, 2015 at 03:10 AM Author Report Share Posted September 2, 2015 at 03:10 AM Exactly. My friend is a high-net-worth individual who is concerned he might come under scrutiny for "structuring" and feels that wire transfers, any and all, are a sure way to attract unwanted attention. Not sure if he's right or wrong about all this, but I must respect his wishes in the matter as best I can.
gato Posted September 2, 2015 at 03:18 AM Report Share Posted September 2, 2015 at 03:18 AM In that case, 银行汇票 should be ok for your purposes. 银行汇票 is a kind of 汇票 that is paid out of the bank's account. See below. You might want to print out these web pages and bring them to the bank with you. http://www.boc.cn/cbservice/cncb6/cb61/200811/t20081112_10046.html
