zhugeliang Posted December 12, 2003 at 11:32 PM Report Posted December 12, 2003 at 11:32 PM Hey all, I'd like to try out my Chinese but I have no idea how to type Chinese characters - any ideas? I'm in linux, I suppose that further compliates matters. Maybe I'll have to ask elsewhere but if any of you know software that can do it that'd be helpful! Anyways, for now I'll stick with pinyin.. nimen haoma? Quote
Quest Posted December 12, 2003 at 11:52 PM Report Posted December 12, 2003 at 11:52 PM some linux distributions come with language packs preinstalled or as a separate module, check with your distribution's website. Quote
roddy Posted December 13, 2003 at 01:38 AM Report Posted December 13, 2003 at 01:38 AM I'll move this into computing and give it a more specific title - better chance of an answer Roddy PS Hen hao. Quote
zhugeliang Posted December 13, 2003 at 04:08 AM Author Report Posted December 13, 2003 at 04:08 AM Nevermind, it wasn't all that hard. If anyone else ever has this problem, xcin is the program you need - I had it but the interface is very confusing (but nice once you figure it out) - google can be your friend. 你们好吗? There Hopefully that shows up correctly for everyone else. Quote

beirne Posted June 17, 2004 at 04:45 AM Report Posted June 17, 2004 at 04:45 AM I have xcin working in Linux but need help on one thing. If using pinyin entry I type something like "yi", how do I get to the next set of characters after the initial display? I'm stuck on the first 10 characters that xcin presents. Quote
beirne Posted June 17, 2004 at 11:10 AM Report Posted June 17, 2004 at 11:10 AM Nevermind. The space key cycles through the groups of characters. Quote
imron Posted July 11, 2004 at 06:41 AM Report Posted July 11, 2004 at 06:41 AM Under linux, I've found fcitx to be really useful http://www.fcitx.org. It's small, fast, and best of all has good support for wubizixing. Regarding setting up Chinese input under Linux, a page I found to be really useful is http://dev.gentoo.org/~liquidx/chinese/chinese-v1.html. Although the page focuses on the gentoo distribution, the basic information it contains can be applied to any distro you want. Quote
