New Members ancella Posted September 14, 2015 at 05:54 PM New Members Report Share Posted September 14, 2015 at 05:54 PM I i'd love to know what this (see photo) means. It's on an old pipe (waterpipe or opiumpipe?) which my mother bought for me on a trip in China.
Shelley Posted September 14, 2015 at 10:03 PM Report Share Posted September 14, 2015 at 10:03 PM it is Fu 福 meaning good fortune, blessing, happiness. It is very commonly used on things around Chinese new year. In your picture the character is upside down. However it is sometimes used upside down to increase the good luck, why? I don't know, its just what I have been told.
xiaokaka Posted September 14, 2015 at 10:27 PM Report Share Posted September 14, 2015 at 10:27 PM @Shelley, Both 倒 and 到 are pronounced dào, so they play with the characters, 福倒 "福 upside down" ⇒ 福到 "福 arrive".
