New Members Katy MR Posted September 20, 2015 at 01:15 PM New Members Report Share Posted September 20, 2015 at 01:15 PM 你 好! I will be studying Mandarin soon and would really like to use a Chinese name. Based on the origins of my name I have come up with Míngzhì Chún 明智 纯 Could someone please tell me if these sound ok together and if they are suitable for a female name? 谢谢! somethingfunny Posted September 21, 2015 at 01:27 AM Report Share Posted September 21, 2015 at 01:27 AM You say you will be studying Mandarin soon, will you have a Chinese teacher? It would be a good idea to ask them to give you a name so that (1) you can discuss it with someone in person and (2) show your Chinese teacher that you are enthusiastic and want to take the class seriously. There are many threads on this forum about the perils of choosing Chinese names, you'd be wise to read a few.
New Members Katy MR Posted September 21, 2015 at 06:12 AM Author New Members Report Share Posted September 21, 2015 at 06:12 AM Hi! Yes, it's likely that my teacher will be Chinese. Thanks for the advice! I don't start classes for two weeks. It feels like such a long time to wait!
skylee Posted September 21, 2015 at 09:23 AM Report Share Posted September 21, 2015 at 09:23 AM It is OK. But note that 明 is a surname. 明智 is not and will not be no matter how you would like it to be. 純 is not a surname either. So the name should be written as 明智純 with no spacing among the three characters. In Hanyu Pinyin it should be Míng Zhìchún.) Also, make sure you can pronounce the tones accurately, so that chun2 will not become chun3 (蠢/ stupid).
Shelley Posted September 21, 2015 at 12:41 PM Report Share Posted September 21, 2015 at 12:41 PM Taking into account what skylee has said, were you planing on using Mingzhi as a first or last name? Just wondered if you had done it last name first or the other way round or had you not taken that into account? Usually last name first is used in China. As suggested by somethingfunny I would ask your teacher, or other Chinese speakers to help you choose a name. Also as somethingfunny says choosing a Chinese name can be perilous. I hope you really enjoy your Chinese learning journey.
New Members Katy MR Posted September 21, 2015 at 06:25 PM Author New Members Report Share Posted September 21, 2015 at 06:25 PM Hi. Thank you for the replies! I was going to use Míngzhì as a surname but that option is out now. I think I'll just be patient and wait until I start my course, hopefully my teacher will give me a name that works. Thanks Shelley, I can't wait to start studying!
