Chinese Government Scholarship selection criteria

你们好!I've just graduated from my university in the United States and I'm hoping to return to Shanghai (where I once studied abroad) so I can either improve my Chinese in a Chinese language program or get my Master's degree at a university in China (in an English-taught Master's program). I don't really have the funds to just up and move to China, so I really want to get the Chinese Government Scholarship! However, I really don't know much about which criteria the Chinese government uses to decide to whom to grant the scholarship. So I'm wondering if anyone can tell me what they look for in an applicant! For example, do they look at your GPA, your college major, work experience? Or is it mainly based on how well you write your essay and explain why you deserve the scholarship? Thanks a lot, guys!

MilesM,

I hope to apply for a one-year language scholarship for the 2016-2017 academic year. I thought I would apply last year, but my work granted me a contract extension that I couldn't resist. These scholarships seem to be generous and really good opportunities for further study. I hope to get one of these scholarships some day.

I have looked at past threads from other posters to get an idea about the CSC application process. The thread history can be lengthy (91 pages for 2015!) but skimming through it can give one a lot of insights:

2015: http://www.chinese-forums.com/index.php?/topic/47670-csc-scholarship-applicationsresults-2015/

2014 (results): http://www.chinese-forums.com/index.php?/topic/44788-csc-scholarship-results-2014/

2014 (American/EU applicants): http://www.chinese-forums.com/index.php?/topic/42467-csc-scholarship-2014-americaneu-applicants/

2014 (general): http://www.chinese-forums.com/index.php?/topic/42466-csc-scholarship-2014-general-discussion/

I also take a look at the CSC website every now and then to gain an understanding of what I should submit and also to check if there are any changes in requirements:

One of the websites that I have spent a lot of time checking out is the one that briefly details the various scholarship-accepting universities and the programs that can take scholarship students:

I'm just sharing what I have done to become somewhat familiar with the process and to gather information. Just my two jiao. Hope this helps and good luck!

Warm regards,

Chris Two Times
