thomasc Posted September 29, 2015 at 11:40 AM Report Posted September 29, 2015 at 11:40 AM I'd like to use the pinyin input method to help memorize the tones of Chinese characters. Can the Windows 7 pinyin input method be set to require me to enter tone before showing the list of possible characters? (e.g. type wo1 for 窩, 蝸; wo3 for 我) Also, is there any good website that has games for pinyin training / testing? Thank you. Quote
querido Posted September 29, 2015 at 03:55 PM Report Posted September 29, 2015 at 03:55 PM Related info if you're interested: According to the last line in this post of mine, the IME in the word processor NJStar can be set to require the tone number. And if I'm not mistaken, the IME "continues to work even after the (free) demo (of NJStar 6) expires". I've been using NJStar for a year or so and nothing bad has happened that I know of. Quote

Shelley Posted September 29, 2015 at 08:16 PM Report Posted September 29, 2015 at 08:16 PM I had a look around the help files for the IME in windows 7 and I couldn't find a way to force you to use the tone marks but you can use them if you want. So it just requires some discipline from you to always use tone numbers when you input characters. I think you have to go and change some settings to alow tone numbers, sorry not sure exactly what these setting are, but have a look at the help files. Quote
Shelley Posted September 29, 2015 at 10:08 PM Report Posted September 29, 2015 at 10:08 PM Having done some more research it looks like it has been left out on the move from XP to 7 this may not be possible with windows 7 IME, sorry to have led you astray, Quote
calibre2001 Posted October 18, 2015 at 08:07 PM Report Posted October 18, 2015 at 08:07 PM Just experimented with the zhuyin/bopomofo keyboard. Tone marks seem to be part of the standard keyboard, so this might help in forcing one to know the tone of the word one is typing. Quote
