Geiko Posted October 5, 2015 at 03:56 PM Report Posted October 5, 2015 at 03:56 PM It looks gibberish to me, but I'm not a native speaker, so wait to see what other forum members say. Quote

speedjet Posted October 5, 2015 at 05:06 PM Author Report Posted October 5, 2015 at 05:06 PM Hello, sorry but what you mean with 2 Quote
Shelley Posted October 5, 2015 at 05:14 PM Report Posted October 5, 2015 at 05:14 PM I think it also looks like gibberish. What makes you think it is that old? Have you any more info? Quote
speedjet Posted October 5, 2015 at 05:40 PM Author Report Posted October 5, 2015 at 05:40 PM the tin box is from 1880-1900. this is 100% Quote
edelweis Posted October 5, 2015 at 05:40 PM Report Posted October 5, 2015 at 05:40 PM It could very well be an old tin box with fake Chinese characters on it. Gibberish Chinese fonts are not really a twenty first century invention. Quote
Geiko Posted October 5, 2015 at 06:42 PM Report Posted October 5, 2015 at 06:42 PM @speedjet: Skylee means that she agrees with my comment, which is number 2 (#2). Quote
Shelley Posted October 5, 2015 at 07:16 PM Report Posted October 5, 2015 at 07:16 PM I was interested to know more, it intrigued me. I didn't mean to imply I didn't believe it was that old, just wondered about it. Quote
Geiko Posted October 5, 2015 at 07:42 PM Report Posted October 5, 2015 at 07:42 PM @edelweis and Shelley: I have to admit that my first reaction was exactly that one, how can it be so old if there's gibberish Chinese on it? And then I thought, why couldn't somebody from one hundred years ago write gibberish? It would even make more sense, because in a less globalised world, it would be harder to discover it was a fake. And after all, the Voynich manuscript was written in 15th century... Quote

But that's the modern simplified form of 蘆. Would 芦 have been used in this context as an 异体字 some 100 years ago? Quote
