New Members jae Posted October 18, 2015 at 02:48 AM New Members Report Share Posted October 18, 2015 at 02:48 AM I'm looking for an app to practice writing characters, but haven't been able to find one so far that fits what I'd like. I'm hoping to find something that provides English/Pinyin without showing the character, since it seems that a lot of apps show you the character and then you just copy it, rather than having to come up with it on your own. I heard of Skritter, but was looking for something without a monthly subscription fee. Any suggestions would be appreciated!
Michael H Posted October 19, 2015 at 04:31 AM Report Share Posted October 19, 2015 at 04:31 AM I think Skritter is really the best for this. The closest substitute might be Pleco flashcards (if you have the handwriting recognition add-on installed).
Shelley Posted October 19, 2015 at 12:59 PM Report Share Posted October 19, 2015 at 12:59 PM It does seem as though Skritter is the only thing that does what you want but is expensive. I agree Pleco is a reasonable substitute and it is well worthwhile having Pleco anyway. The cost of Pleco is very reasonable and is a one off payment. I have found however that it is all very well learning the characters with an app but to actually practice writing them, nothing beats pen and paper. For this I can highly recommend Hanzi Grids http://www.hanzigrids.com It is very good value for money. If it would be more convenient to use a phone or tablet then I have had success using Hanzi Grids, it is designed to use with pen and paper, you input your characters and choose your format, colours, size, style etc. you print it off and use this for practice, this is very good. But I have also used it on my tablet, when you use Hanzi Grids it generates a PDF which you can open with a pdf viewer, I use adobe and this has a mode which allows you to write on the screen in any colour you choose. So I chose red and using a stylus I write over the squares with red. You can choose to save or discard the changes so you can use it more than once. I hope this is clear and of some help.

kawakusong Posted November 5, 2015 at 05:42 AM Report Share Posted November 5, 2015 at 05:42 AM Skritter is cool but it cost too much.... Just as Shelley mentioned, writing with pen and paper is the most effective way which is also my choice.
