roddy Posted December 13, 2003 at 02:40 AM Report Posted December 13, 2003 at 02:40 AM As far as I can tell, this is an entirely different book from the Advanced Chinese Reader by DeFrancis someone was looking for earlier. I don't know how available this book is, I'd never seen or heard of it before I picked it up in Hong Kong recently. I'm really impressed by it though. It offers a selection of baihua readings from 1917 onwards, very well annotated and laid-out, with pieces from Lao She, Lu Xun, Mao Zedong and Fang Lizhi (and many more people I've never even heard of) Published by the Chinese University Press in Hong Kong, ISBN 962-201-533-6, and it cost me 195HK$ The pieces are in simplifed or traditional characters according to how they were originally written - so I'm getting my first practice in reading traditional texts as well.
