Hello!

Is 你星期六给我的信我收到了 I`ve received the letter you sent me on Saturday?

Where is ‘sent’ here,please?

Thank you in advance.

In this sentence, "give/gave" 给 takes the place of "sent." Meaning is the same.

A more natural-sounding sentence would use 发给我 instead of 给我。

Are you and the previous poster working together? Perhaps you are just using the same textbook.

"你星期六给我的" is a prepositional phrase. It gives additional information about the letter which the speaker just received.

Yes,that`s what confused me.I expected there either 发 or 寄,because 给 strictly means 'give', which doesn`t fit in this case.

Agree, @rtf. 发给 for e-mail and 寄给 for postal mail would sound better to my (admittedly non-native-speaker) ear. The way it is written in the example sentence suggests someone simply handed the letter to the speaker. Maybe that's what happened; I don't know the context of the story.

There are some grammar whiz kids on the forum. (I am not one of them.) So maybe someone will come along with a better explanation.

给 strictly means 'give'

给 means a lot of different things, and for that matter, so does 'give'. They overlap in one small area. Looking for word-to-word correspondence will not get you far.

Just as you won't find 'on' or 'the' in the Chinese sentence, there is no particular reason you should find one word that means 'sent'.

Merged - hope the rest of the students in your class join too  :D

你 is you, not he. Given that the point of the sentence is 'I've received that letter', it's unlikely to be 'gave' as in that case the giver would know the getter has got it.

Maria, I told you that I will ask this question  !

But I thought rtf was self studying from a textbook.

Now rtf is taking a class with a Maria who calls rtf "maria".

You'll have to forgive me if I consider this L3P / Maria86 / rtf situation as a puzzle.

Fortunately Roddy seems to have insider information...

Is this a test of some sort ?

@edelweis,you`re concentrating on the wrong things. That way you`ll never change your status from 'Poor' to a higher level. I think a forum member here  or anywhere else has two choices: 1.to answer a question or 2.to ignore it. But you seem to be interested in anything but answering questions. Are you some sort of a detective? Or you didn`t play detective enough in your childhood? Listen, let people learn,OK,that`s why they come here. And let`s make it 'the most comfortable forum you have ever run into', as I thought it was when I just started learning here!

Oh. I was expecting an answer from Roddy or Maria86 at best.

Nice redirection but I could return the question to you.

Are you so much in love with mystery that you are unable to give a straight answer to the question :

what is your relationship to L3P and Maria86?

My dear friend!!! Who do you think you are to ask questions like that? I could`ve asked you What is your relationship with Putin? You`d better have a look at your own profile:

So,who IS in love with mystery, mister?

Enough, methinks. Either rtf and Maria are sharing a computer and a course of study, or it's the same person who for some reason has two accounts. If it's the latter, please pick one account and stick to it. I can merge them if you want.
