drungood Posted November 3, 2015 at 04:48 AM Report Posted November 3, 2015 at 04:48 AM I've only seen these four movies, which I'll rank best to worst 1) Eat Drink Man Woman 2) Yi Yi 3) You Are the Apple of My Eye (guilty to say I enjoyed watching this) 4) Secret (entertaining concept but too cheesy) Quote
giokve Posted November 3, 2015 at 08:07 AM Report Posted November 3, 2015 at 08:07 AM I quite liked Eternal summer (盛夏光年). It has a great soundtrack. Quote

Lu Posted November 3, 2015 at 10:11 AM Report Posted November 3, 2015 at 10:11 AM Consider: - Island Etude (deaf young man cycles around Taiwan and meets various people on the road, nice movie) - Cape No. 7 (I forgot the story, it's about Kending. Was very big when it came out, although I was not too impressed) - Monga (power struggles among second-generation mafia kids in Taipei. Friendship, backstabbing and some violence, I realy enjoyed this one) And last weekend I saw 父后七日 'Seven days in heaven'. The story of a funeral: all the rites and rituals come by, you get to know all the people involved a little bit, and despite the sad subject matter it's quite funny. I really enjoyed this one too (for different reasons than I enjoyed Monga). Quote
Angelina Posted November 4, 2015 at 04:02 AM Report Posted November 4, 2015 at 04:02 AM Try 俠女 (A Touch of Zen). A classic movie from Taiwan. Not a movie about Taiwan. Probably all your favorite fight scenes are trying to imitate 俠女, it has had a much bigger influence on cinema than most people are aware. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0064451/ Quote
character Posted November 4, 2015 at 12:04 PM Report Posted November 4, 2015 at 12:04 PM https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Taiwanese_films Your mileage will vary, but ones I've enjoyed other than those already mentioned include: Millenium Mambo * What Time is it There? Double Vision Blue Gate Crossing * Silk The Most Distant Course The Drummer The Treasure Hunter Taipei Exchanges * * I feel safe recommending these. Quote
songwen Posted December 28, 2016 at 04:14 AM Report Posted December 28, 2016 at 04:14 AM Try Hou Hsiao-hsien's movie's. I've seen the puppetmaster, the city of sadness, millennium mambo, three times and the assassin. Well worth a look. I usually try to find a movie I like and then check the director's other movies, especially for foreign language movies that you don't really hear too much about. 2 Quote
