roddy Posted November 11, 2015 at 09:45 AM Report Posted November 11, 2015 at 09:45 AM So what's your company's relationship with the providers of the scholarships and the universities? How do you get paid? I'd suggest students are cautious about using middlemen for scholarship applications - where possible apply directly. Don't pay any inflated fees for things like airport pickup, etc. Quote

ZhangKaiRong Posted November 12, 2015 at 09:09 AM Report Posted November 12, 2015 at 09:09 AM Good ol' agencies helping you to get a scholarship at any Chinese university, exploiting terrific bribes guanxi. Quote
roddy Posted November 12, 2015 at 10:20 AM Report Posted November 12, 2015 at 10:20 AM I actually think there could be a legitimate business here. Applications for scholarships and to Chinese universities can be opaque and confusing. Chinese universities pay agencies to get them students. So you set up a company helping students with both applications, the student goes to the uni, the uni gets the scholarship fees, your company gets a fee. The student hasn't actually lost anything. I also find it plausible (but don't know either way) that with provincial and city scholarships, the folk with the money have next to no idea how to find students. The problems are that the company is unlikely to be able to resist charging a fee to the student as well, or offering 'service packages' including airport pickup, a SIM card, etc, at inflated prices; and there's an incentive for the company to push students towards the universities that they get the highest kickbacks from. Watch out also for, eg, scholarships that only guarantee the first year of a four year course*, unclear 'tests' you have to pass to keep the scholarship, a requirement you stay in school dorms, etc. *A requirement you show up to class and pass your exams is obviously appropriate. But a requirement you finish in the top 3 in your class or pass some extra test is open to abuse - the fewer people get second-year scholarships, the more money they have to offer first-year scholarships, and the more people are forced to become fee-paying.
