tai4ji2x Posted November 12, 2015 at 01:20 PM Report Share Posted November 12, 2015 at 01:20 PM has anyone else experienced this? it happens with many (but not all) web pages i view and documents that i work with. something like 1/4 to 1/3 of all the characters are randomly bolded. with web searches and when writing wordpress blog entries, it ALWAYS happens. not sure when this phenomenon started, but i don't remember it being a problem about 4 or 5 years ago. therefore i can't really pin down what i must have [un]installed to cause it. granted, i am also admittedly using a clunky 9-yr old laptop, still chugging along on windows xp. (i know, i know...)
daofeishi Posted November 12, 2015 at 01:50 PM Report Share Posted November 12, 2015 at 01:50 PM It looks like a font problem. Have you tried to change the browser's default font to a full unicode font? Try one of the other fonts installed, or use Google's https://www.google.com/get/noto/
roddy Posted November 12, 2015 at 01:54 PM Report Share Posted November 12, 2015 at 01:54 PM Looks like a font issue, yeah - dig down into settings and have a look. There may be separate settings for Asian fonts or something. Also, a free tip - Cleartype.
imron Posted November 13, 2015 at 12:12 AM Report Share Posted November 13, 2015 at 12:12 AM It's definitely a font problem, in particular the browser can't find the characters in whatever font you have configured and it substitutes them from a different font rather than having empty blocks on the page. In addition to control panel settings, I would also consider checking out the firefox settings and see what the default font is for Chinese language.
dwq Posted November 13, 2015 at 12:32 AM Report Share Posted November 13, 2015 at 12:32 AM Roddy, most of the Chinese fonts use embedded bitmap at screen resolutions. Which means unfortunately no amount of Cleartype tuning is going to change their appearance.
roddy Posted November 13, 2015 at 12:47 AM Report Share Posted November 13, 2015 at 12:47 AM Yep, but it makes all the other languages much prettier. I always feel sorry for people who post screenshots and you can see they haven't found out about it yet...
imron Posted November 13, 2015 at 01:57 AM Report Share Posted November 13, 2015 at 01:57 AM Hah, also, upon further examination, take look at the characters that are appearing differently. Do you notice something that they all have in common? That's right, they're all simplified characters - traditional characters all look fine. So I'm guessing whatever font you have configured is a traditional only font that doesn't have many (any) simplified characters in it and the OS is substituting in characters from a font that does have them.
