The dictionary quotes 禮義廉 ~ 無恥 as an example. 在线新华字典 says -> "歇后语 xiēhòuyǔ [a two-part allegorical saying;sequel] 由两部分组成的固定语句,前一部分多用比喻,像谜面,后一部分是本意,像谜底,通常只说前一部分,后一部分不言而喻" So let's share some 歇後語. shibo77 Posted August 2, 2005 at 03:00 AM Report Posted August 2, 2005 at 03:00 AM Some common ones: 八仙过海--各显神通 The Eight Immortals crossing the sea, each using their special powers. 瞎子摸象--自以为是 Blind people feeling the shape of parts of an elephant, each thinking differently on the issue. 顺风耳--听得远 The ear placed towards the same direction to which the wind is blowing, hearing farther. 风雨中的泰山--不动摇 Mount Tài in the wind and rain(thunderstorm), unmoving stance. 水中捞月--一场空 Trying to scoop up the moon from the water, resulting in nothing, pointless. 照相机对着马尾巴--拍马屁 Camera directed towards a horse's tail, shooting the horse's buttocks, which means sucking up. 雪天穿裙子--美丽有动(冻)人 Wearing a blouse on a snowy day, beautiful and moving, dòng meaning moving is a homophone with dòng meaning freezing. Basically you would just say the first part (before the --), and the meaning of the second part is implied. It is a bit like euphemisms. He's trying to scoop up the moon from the water.
