TCcookie Posted June 26, 2005 at 01:38 AM Report Posted June 26, 2005 at 01:38 AM Hello all. After a long break I am resuming serious study of my poor, neglected Chinese by going through the elementary school reader stories that Roddy so graciously linked to a while back, starting with one called 一块石头. Anyway, questions follow: 1) 苏轼稍稍看了一下,便丢在一边,继续往前掘。 Is "便“ here used to mean "then?" What's the deal? And does the second part say, "...and continued digging where he left off? What exactly is 前 referring to? 2) 苏轼轻轻敲一敲,丁丁当当,声音楞脆哩。 Su Shi lightly knocked it... "ding ding dong dong"... but what does the last part mean? I seem to get confused when things make sounds: grammatically, how does that work? And what exactly does 楞脆哩 mean? 3) 四川省岷江岸边的眉山镇,是个山清水秀的地方。宋朝有名的大文学家、大书法家苏轼就出生在这里。 What does 宋朝 mean? Is that the name of a town? Thanks a ton! Sorry for the oddly phrased questions. Quote

And does the second part say' date=' "...and continued digging where he left off? What exactly is 前 referring to? [/quote'] 便 = then. 往 = towards. 前 = the front. 继续往前掘 = go on to dig ahead. 2) 苏轼轻轻敲一敲,丁丁当当,声音楞脆哩。Su Shi lightly knocked it... "ding ding dong dong"... but what does the last part mean? I seem to get confused when things make sounds: grammatically, how does that work? And what exactly does 楞脆哩 mean? 声音楞脆哩 = it indeed sounded clear and crispy. 哩 = a sort of exclamation to emphasise assertion. (But personally I have not seen 楞脆 before. I guess it is the same as 清脆.) 3) 四川省岷江岸边的眉山镇,是个山清水秀的地方。宋朝有名的大文学家、大书法家苏轼就出生在这里。What does 宋朝 mean? Is that the name of a town? 宋朝 = Song Dynasty. Su Shi was a great poet / artist of the Song Dynasty.
