trevelyan Posted August 31, 2005 at 05:29 AM Report Share Posted August 31, 2005 at 05:29 AM You can also try Adsotrans, which offers a variety of annotation modes (tone mark over pinyin, etc.). The source code and database are both open source and available for download from the site. Some advantages and disadvantages: (1) The software is a natural language parser. It differentiates between ambiguous characters and words by analysing their grammatical and ontological context. One example is providing different pinyin for the character 数 in the sentences 请数一下 and 什么数. Another is ontological flexibility. Note how Adso translates 基地 differently in the sentences 基地是一个恐怖分子组织 and 这个基地是哪国的. (2) The software can unify numbers, names, geographic locations and many other common parts of speech, and provide the correct spoken pinyin for these entries. (3) Users are free to add terms to the backend database, and edit existing entries, with changes reviewed on a monthly basis. When users add content to the backend database, it benefits all users of the system, as well as those developers using project resources for other applications. (4) A much larger dictionary backend than most other free software applications. The backend directionary currently contains approximately 144,000 entries. (5) The software is coded in C++ and runs from the command line. This makes the application less useful for desktop users, who may just wish to use the online interface. Improvements are volunteer-driven. We need people willing/able to develop usable interfaces and help us improve the software.
