Aquatarkus Posted December 25, 2015 at 09:38 AM Report Share Posted December 25, 2015 at 09:38 AM Hello dear friends, I'd like to understand the humor in the following phrase: 今天班主任说:你们都是高一的学生了,谈恋爱很正常,但也请你们收敛点,不要到时候体检班上多出个人来 Today the teacher said: "you are all students, to talk about love is quite normal, but wait a bit, don't make a medical examination in class (???)" I'm puzzled by the last part of joke Please clarify

Aquatarkus Posted December 25, 2015 at 10:01 AM Author Report Share Posted December 25, 2015 at 10:01 AM In other words, there mustn't appear any new people in this class (i.e. to be born)? or what extra people do you mean?

陳德聰 Posted December 25, 2015 at 07:49 PM Report Share Posted December 25, 2015 at 07:49 PM It looks like an issue for understanding arises if you don't realize that 谈恋爱 means "dating". Today the teacher said: "You're all high school students now, so it's normal to start dating, but please exercise a bit of restraint. I don't want to find any extra people in the class when the time comes for medical examination!"

GaHanna Posted December 26, 2015 at 12:10 PM Report Share Posted December 26, 2015 at 12:10 PM Thanks for bringing this up. I was a little puzzled too so before scrolling down I asked my wife to read and explain, but she sent our son to this computer as she was a little busy. He is six and could read up to 谈恋爱. Mammy became available so she had a look and said "not good" (in reference to our son). A little later she explained the joke, as well as our esteemed posters above. What really struck me was how matter of fact the statement is. Middle/High school? Wow. I kind of like it.
