roddy Posted January 4, 2016 at 02:42 PM Report Posted January 4, 2016 at 02:42 PM Think I posted about this last year, but can't find it. Anyway, 3 day junket to Berlin in April for anyone who fancies it. The Mercator Institute for China Studies (MERICS) strives to encourage European students and young graduates to deepen their engagement with contemporary China. In May 2015, MERICS invited fifteen outstanding students from all over Europe to participate in the very first MERICS European China Talent Programme. The highly selective programme covered a broad range of current topics and laid the foundation for a long-lasting and unique network of future European China experts. Linkity link 2 Quote
hoshinoumi Posted January 4, 2016 at 03:42 PM Report Posted January 4, 2016 at 03:42 PM Thank you for sharing I wish my Chinese were that good! Quote
Lu Posted January 4, 2016 at 05:03 PM Report Posted January 4, 2016 at 05:03 PM It's been a while since I graduated, but I shared it to a facebook group of students. Quote
roddy Posted January 4, 2016 at 06:32 PM Author Report Posted January 4, 2016 at 06:32 PM Hoshinoumi, I wouldn't be surprised if your HSK 4 qualifies you - I can't see a specific requirement other than 'Chinese language skills' and and HSK might not be too bad for EU students. Quote
hoshinoumi Posted January 4, 2016 at 08:44 PM Report Posted January 4, 2016 at 08:44 PM But aren't we supposed to write those 4000-character long essay in Chinese?? If not, then I might give it a try Quote
ZhangKaiRong Posted January 5, 2016 at 07:14 AM Report Posted January 5, 2016 at 07:14 AM @hoshinuomi The topic was given in English, and the "Excellent command of English" is also a qualifying criteria. Combining these together, and you have your answer ;) 1 Quote
roddy Posted January 5, 2016 at 09:35 AM Author Report Posted January 5, 2016 at 09:35 AM Also - 4,000 character essay on one page? That's going to be hard to read... I can see the confusion I'd expect the length of an English essay to be given in words, not characters. But maybe they do things differently on Le Continent. Quote
gato Posted January 5, 2016 at 09:53 AM Report Posted January 5, 2016 at 09:53 AM The institution is German. Maybe because the length of German words can be so variable, they count by bytes instead. 2 Quote
ZhangKaiRong Posted January 5, 2016 at 10:08 AM Report Posted January 5, 2016 at 10:08 AM In Central Europe (including Germany), it is quite common in academia to give the lenght of essays in characters instead of words, regardless of the paper's language. Of course, there are some professors who studied at British/American universities, and introduced word-length requirements, but in most schools, the official requirements are in characters (together with an estimation of number of pages). 1 Quote
roddy Posted January 5, 2016 at 10:10 AM Author Report Posted January 5, 2016 at 10:10 AM No excuse now, Hoshinoumi. Deadline's on Feb 1, get writing! Quote
hoshinoumi Posted January 5, 2016 at 12:33 PM Report Posted January 5, 2016 at 12:33 PM Hahaha definitely!!! I didn't know about central Europe stating essays in characters, you definitely learn something new everyday Quote
Tianjin42 Posted January 5, 2016 at 01:36 PM Report Posted January 5, 2016 at 01:36 PM We received this through the university here at the Contemporary China Centre. I may well send a CV and essay. Quote
roddy Posted January 31, 2016 at 10:10 AM Author Report Posted January 31, 2016 at 10:10 AM So, who's applying or applied? Quote
Tianjin42 Posted January 31, 2016 at 10:11 PM Report Posted January 31, 2016 at 10:11 PM Yeah I sent one over. Looks like they received a fair few applications last year and I have seen it mentioned in three different places so I would expect a few hundred applications this time. Anyway, will let you know if it is positive, otherwise just won't mention it and probably will pretend I didn't apply. Quote
roddy Posted February 11, 2016 at 03:48 PM Author Report Posted February 11, 2016 at 03:48 PM Well, good luck! Do you know when you find out? Quote
Tianjin42 Posted February 11, 2016 at 07:54 PM Report Posted February 11, 2016 at 07:54 PM Thanks. We find out 'shortly after the deadline' so not too long presumably. Quote
roddy Posted February 15, 2016 at 11:04 AM Author Report Posted February 15, 2016 at 11:04 AM Hoshinoumi, did you apply? Quote
hoshinoumi Posted February 17, 2016 at 08:24 AM Report Posted February 17, 2016 at 08:24 AM I had to be already graduated, not about to next time! Quote
Tianjin42 Posted February 26, 2016 at 04:57 PM Report Posted February 26, 2016 at 04:57 PM Alas, received an email informing me that I won't be taking part this time. I know two other candidates who I thought were very strong but they too were unsuccessful. Maybe next year. 1 Quote
