Complements and Cooking 放到 vs 放进

Recommended Posts

I am currently learning about cooking in Chinese and am confused about why these are different complements.

把锅 放到烤箱里。 vs. 把 油 放进锅里。

Why not say 把锅放进烤箱里?

Could I use 入?  Why or why not? 把 锅 放入烤箱里。 把 有放入锅里。??

Is anyone better than the other?

I'm looking for the most 地道的 way of saying these and similar actions and can find it in no resource I have.

Ugg.  Thanks for any insight anyone can offer.

For your two example phrases, what I have heard most often by native speakers in Kunming is less specific, less precise. Afraid I cannot give an explanation or reason.

-- 把锅放在烤箱里。

-- 把油放在锅里。

And by the way, congratulations about learning to cook in Chinese. I do that too and enjoy it a lot. Welcome to the forum.

把油放到/放入/放在/放進鍋裏 all have a lot of results on Google. It seems they are roughly synonymous in this case.

(放到 appears to have the least results for this sentence. Maybe because 進/入/在 imply motion to within something, whereas 到 seems to imply a more general movement - best let a native confirm.)

炒锅烧热放入油

With this construct you can replace 放入 with 放進, but not with放到 or 放在。

Without 里 at the end this sentense means "heat up the frying pan and put in oil".  (Even in English there can be two meanings - put oil in the pan or put the pan in oil - but most of the time it means the former).  In Chinese 里, in this case, serves to differentiate the two.  炒锅烧热放入油里 means to put the heated pan in the oil.  Also with 里 at the end you can replace 放入 with 放進,放到,or 放在 without changing the meaning.

I agree.  I don't think you can just say 把锅放到烤箱 .  You need to state where relative to the oven you want to put the pot when using 到, with 里 being one possibility.

把锅放到烤箱上 / 把锅放到烤箱旁边 / 把锅放到烤箱里

OTOH, 把锅放进烤箱 is fine by itself, 把锅放进烤箱里 is a bit redundant, and 把锅放进烤箱上 doesn't make sense.
