To further complicate, if my phone goes "ding" to alert me that someone has sent me something, if I am not sure of whether it came via SMS or through some IM app like WhatsApp, Line, KKTalk, WeChat, Facebook Messenger... I would very likely say something like "有人给我发信息了". I don't call things that are not SMS by 短信, but I think 信息／讯息 encompasses 短信...
