Is there any kind soul who can explain to me the tradition of 过继 in Chinese culture? And what's the difference between 过继 and adoption?

Thank you all in advance! I appreciate any help!

When someone does not / cannot have a son, he takes a son from a close relative, in order to continue the family lineage.  The son is raised in the new family and for all practical purposes, is treated as a biologicnl son.  This can also ally to a girl, but less frequently.  The English term adoption is more general.
