Are there any Chinese movies with good acting?

Why Chinese movies are so bad. Acting is terrible. I cant stand it.

Only good movies i watched with interesting plot and not bad acting are:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3469910/?ref_=nv_sr_1 - black coal thin ice

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2852400/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1 -touch of sin

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1371585/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1 - life without principles

Those 3 movies where better than most USA films i ever seen.

Are there any more (especially mandarin, not horrors, and not too old, newer than lets say 2008)?

More Gong Li movies, directed by Zhang Yimou/ Impeccable acting and beautiful cinematography in all of them.

Raise the Red Lantern, http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0101640/?ref_=tt_rec_tti

Shanghai Triads, http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0115012/?ref_=tt_rec_tt

Chen Kaige directed:

Farewell my Concubine, http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0106332/?ref_=tt_rec_tt

As for good acting, the child who plays the main character in "Little Red Flowers" is brilliant. The film is based on a story by Wang Shuo. I think it's a little non-conformist gem and very funny.

Edited to add link for Little Red Flowers: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0492473/

Sorry, all from the 1990s.

There are many many excellent Chinese movies from the 90s and 00s, but from the top of my head I will list some fine movies that are newer than 2008, as you specifically requested. I suppose I can also list Taiwanese Movies, since it's Mandarin too:

Hear Me (听说) from 2009  (this one is not ideal for listening practice though, due to it's plot, but it's an excellent movie)

City of Life and Death (南京! 南京!) from 2009

Under the Hawthorn Tree (山楂树之恋) from 2010

Aftershock (唐山大地震) from 2010

You Are the Apple of My Eye (那些年,我们一起追的女孩) from 2011

Finding Mr. Right (北京遇上西雅图) from 2013

Coming Home (归来) from 2014

Dearest (亲爱的) from 2014

also, Mandarin versions exist for the following excellent Hong Kong (Cantonese) Movies:

A Simple Life (桃姐) from 2011

Echoes of the Rainbow (岁月神偷) from 2011

Really good recommendations from everybody. However, I don't know if sangajtam will find City of Life and Death too violent. I liked it, but as many other movies that talk about 南京大屠杀 (or about any war, for that matter), it's quite harsh.

Recently saw Gong Li's "Coming Home", and she is just phenomenal.

心花路放 was a very good movie. It follows a guy post divorce. The opening scene is hilarious and is what locked me in. It's a bit of a bro-mance with a Chinese flare.

I saw a film a while back and then read the short story it's based on:

哦香雪 - O, Xiang Xue.

It's a charming and atmospheric film that takes you back to a China that's still there if you look hard enough.

I second Raise the Red Lantern, it's a great movie and so interesting. It's true that many of the actors in it are rather bad but it doesn't really detract from the movie that much as a whole. Gong Li is great of course. Check out Zhang YiMou's other movies too. Don't forget there's always Hong Kong movies too, like Jackie's old Kung fu movies which are great if you like Kung fu.

Anything with Gong Li or Tang Wei.

As I recall Nanjing! Nanjing! the acting was good, but I never ever want to see or read any other Nanjing massacre book or movie again.

I haven't watched many Chinese movies but when I saw you mentioned Black Coal Thin Ice I remember I read somewhere that the director is making another movie called Wild Goose Lake 南方车站聚会 with Hu Ge 胡歌 starring in it. I haven't watch Black Coal Thin Ice but I really like Hu Ge so looking forward to see it.

Operation Red Sea 红海行动 is a pretty good action movie, made last year (2018.) Plot, direction, acting are all solidly OK for such a flick. (This isn't something made for the art-house crowd; it was intended to have mass appeal.)

Not sure how you define bad acting, of course. Do you require Shakespearean delivery?
