Salary Expectations Marketing Internship

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I'm currently looking for internships during the summer and was recently asked what kind of salary expectations I have. I have one more semester until I graduate and will have a double degree in Chinese and political sciences. The specific position that I'm talking about now is a marketing internship for an international company based in Beijing.

What do you think that I can ask for?

Best regards,

Aren't most internships unpaid?

If there is any kind of "real salary" isn't that just a job?

You might end up being offered a stipend of some sort or just a bit towards expenses. I would have thought you'd need to self fund your time for the most part.

Internships should be paid. Not the full amount (because the intern is still learning and can't pull the full weight) but some amount (because the intern is contributing work, especially towards the end of the internship, and because the intern needs to eat). But usually that amount is set by the company. I don't have a good idea of what to ask for, I think it's pretty reasonable to ask the company what they normally pay their interns. If they have no idea either, perhaps ask for an amount that would cover basic room and board.

Covering room and board. Is that a stipend? :-)

You could ask for a salary based on those two things though. Where abouts is the job? You could try and find how much it would cost to rent a room, this site has a fair number of topics on food expenses etc and perhaps rental agencies online would give you an idea of rent.

Just wanted to update you all. They offered me 4000 RMB a month -so it's possible to find paid internships!
But 90 % of all the other internships I've been looking at have been unpaid.

That's more than decent. Congratulations and enjoy the internship!

That is indeed more than decent! I have friends that are university graduates and only get around 4k a month (and they are not interns).
