112233 Posted February 25, 2016 at 12:15 PM Report Posted February 25, 2016 at 12:15 PM Hi everyone, just doing some research for a friend. At the moment in Beijing how possible is it to get an ~6 month english teaching contract? For background, the person has a bachelors degree (not in teaching), has over 2 years post-grad experience (again not in teaching), and has never taught english before. I had a look at some previous threads and from what I understand with this background it will pretty difficult, but if anyone can offer any updated advice it would be much appreciated. Quote
Rey Posted February 25, 2016 at 01:21 PM Report Posted February 25, 2016 at 01:21 PM What kind of VISA your friend has ? where is he/she from ? Maybe the visa could be the most problematic part. 1 Quote
ChTTay Posted February 25, 2016 at 02:00 PM Report Posted February 25, 2016 at 02:00 PM Your "friends" background is fine. Generally company's don't want to offer 6 month contacts as they're too short. They probably aren't worth the effort to get the teacher the expert cert., residence permit etc Also, if they've never taught before it's likely the first half of that 6 months won't be the best. By the time they get the hang of things near the end of the semester, they'll be leaving. Finally, a common complaint from students or students parents is about changing teachers. It often isn't the schools fault but it's just the way things are. Often enough teachers come to teach English for 12 months then move on. A few might stay for 18 months and an even smaller number 2+ years. If a teacher is definitely going to leave after six months it can be tough for a school to agree to hire them, knowing they are likely to have problems sooner than normal. In the end, you might be able to find a 6 month contract but the above factors are likely an issue. Perhaps looking outside of Beijjng, somewhere less popular might be an idea. The company "Aston English" used to offer 6 month contracts. 2 Quote
ChTTay Posted February 25, 2016 at 02:53 PM Report Posted February 25, 2016 at 02:53 PM I should add it depends where you/they are from. If it's not a native speaking country then it's a whole other ball game. Quote
