MDBG (an online dictionary) lists the following words when searching for "maverick":

 []

  • solitary hero
  • maverick

 []

  • solitary hero
  • maverick

 []

  • regardless of the law and of natural morality (idiom)
  • maverick
  • undisciplined and out of control

 []

  • coming and going alone (idiom)
  • lone operator
  • keeping to oneself
  • unsociable
  • maverick

 []

  • maverick
  • deliberately unconventional
  • to conceal the whole story

So there seems to be a few alternatives, and maybe all the ten people you asked were correct  :D. I personally think the first two alternatives – 孤胆 and 孤胆英雄 – sounds best, with the first one best for a nickname (but I'm no native speaker). But there are probably other words or phrases that works equally well or better.

does the word 'maverick' actually imply 'hero' ? i thought its just "solitary, independent thinker and doesn't follow tradition" is there a way to drop the "hero" part out ? hahah

holy crap !!! 10 ways to spell 1 word ? thats insane !!.... its not like english where ya can ask 10 people how to spell 'apple' and 10 people will give ya the exact same answer ay ? hahah

thanx for the help Skylee !... can ya give me a tad discription of what 瀟灑 means ? i went on google translate and it says "chic" which i doubt is accurate haha... then i went to the site ya gave me and it says "confident and at ease" its not really what i'm after... but i found this 特立獨行的人,行為不合常規的人 (https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english-chinese-traditional/maverick) is there something ya can think of maybe shorter that means the same thing ? can ya suggest something along those lines with maybe 2-4 characters ? another person recommended 标新立异

thanx heaps

Apples are apples, but there are many varieties - golden delicious, granny smith, fuji, royal gala - each of which have a different look and taste.

The people giving you 10 different answers are giving you different variations on the theme you are asking, because there are multiple ways to express the concept with each way emphasising a different aspect.

獨行侠 (simplified) or 獨行俠 (traditional)

獨 alone, but here also carries the meaning of "apart from the crowd"

行 walk, travel, but also means "do", "act"

侠, 俠 a chivalrous person, usually good at martial arts, and helps others and stands up for justice

heya lips... can it just be 獨行

to mean  "different from the crowd (not follow tradition) and

行 "act"

so "act different from the crowd / not follow the norm

by the way how many people here is chinese ?

i figured maybe its best and easiest if i showed ya guys what i'm after.... i've attached a photo of my new hero/idol haha... i think his name also represent his personality... maybe ya guys/gals can have alil read and pick me a name similar to his hahah....... i'm trying to avoid the word "heretic" since it implies "religion"

thanks so so much in advance again !!

The original question was about maverick, which is a noun, a person, so I suggested 獨行俠.  Of course you can use 獨行, but it no longer signifies a person.  Actually I quite like 獨行.

If you are enamored with Huang Yaoshi, why not just use 东邪 (東邪 traditional)?   :)

the reason why i asked about maverick at the start is because i think his chinese name is "eastern heretic"  the word 'heretic" in english implies religion... back in the olden days.. these guys would bust into churches and temples with their own religious views and preach to others with their whacky ideas and disregarding which temple and churches they were in..... thats not what i want

the word maverick... is an independent thinker... doesn't agree or follow with tradition.... because i was raised here in australia... when i visited vietnam not long ago...  i don't agree with the traditions they have there... e.g arranged marriage (not everyone has it... but the ones that do can't refuse who the parents pick)... (not being able to argue with parents coz their older even if the parent is wrong... e.g if the teacher says 1+1=2.... and the parent might not be too clever might say 1+1=7.... ok if the kid puts 2.... then he would disrespect the parent... but if he puts 7 then he's screwed) so yeah i just don't get viet tradition or asian tradition if that applies to ya as well... thats why i wanna scrap the whole tradition thing... just be an independent thinker...

i don't want to copy his entire name.. come on hahahahahaha

so heretic... is picking a religion and ignoring everyone elses religion...

maverick on the other hand.. ignores traditions...and just does whatever they want.. independently... like the highlighted part in the photo hahah

so if ya can think of a similar name to 东邪.. but more suited for me ? and maybe a little discription as well ?

thanx again !!

东邪/東邪 means eastern heretic.  If you have this tatoo'd, people will think that

1.  you love The Epic of The Condor Heroes,

2.  you maybe an expert in Chinese kung fu,

3.  you're different, but

4.  the tatoo is not serious.

hahahahahah !! yeah thats why i didn't wanna use his name... but can ya think of something similar to his name ?

hey i was thinking maybe i been asking the wrong questions.... i think the word "heretic" in chinese doesn't imply religion like it does in english ay.... coz in the movie they call him "heretic" because he does what he wants and doesn't share the traditional view (nothing to do with religion) do ya know another word that means the same thing ?

Posted

I'd go for 東邪

10/10 people that see it won't think it means "heretic".

I don't know much about Wuxia, or Chinese nicknames, but I feel like 東邪 is a nickname more along the lines of how I might refer to myself as "The Anointed One" because I think I'm really f**king awesome, rather than how I might refer to myself as "12 pints somethingfunny" because that's how many I had that one night I threw my kebab in a policeman's face.

By which I mean, as lips pointed out, you're not really ripping off his name.

Posted

hahah it kinda is.... coz if ya put 東邪 into google.... that movie with that character will pop up straight away hahahah... thats why i want something similar in the same vein.. but not use the exact name hahah

I came up with "千山獨行" when lips mentioned "獨行俠" in the previous post. It literally means walking alone across thousand mountains.

"千山獨行" is that kind of nickname you would see in a wuxia novel, but not really a common nickname in the real life. I do not know what you want a Chinese nickname for after all.

Actually, "千山獨行" may remind someone of another famous wuxia character -- 楚留香.

what does 千山獨行 mean ? i just want a sick ass tattoo that sounds cool like maverick or renegade (in chinese)  but both meaning is hard to explain

soz i don't mean to be rude... but its near 3am here, i need my beauty sleep...i'll try to find alternatives when i wake up hahah  i'd love to pick this up again tomorrow whenever ya guys/gals are free

goodnight and sleep tight peeps... thanx for all the help all day today hahhah

I do not approve of simplified Chinese so will not use it to provide my suggestion. Consider 瀟灑 https://www.mdbg.net...wdrst=1&wdqb=瀟灑

Anything more complicated ?

The word 瀟灑 should be listed among the hardest to write or remember (even the components are very complicated)  :wall
