Shelley Posted March 11, 2016 at 04:41 PM Report Posted March 11, 2016 at 04:41 PM There is a new course offered by edX started March 8th so its not too late to join. I have just finished Mandarinx with Estella so I am keen to keep learning and although it looks like a beginners course, I have enrolled to keep my brain working. I have only just found it so I am not sure what it is like. Have a look here https://www.edx.org/course/learn-mandarin-chinese-start-talking-1-3-tsinghuax-tm01x 2 Quote

Demonic_Duck Posted March 13, 2016 at 02:39 AM Report Posted March 13, 2016 at 02:39 AM @Shelley: It seems like you're constantly choosing to study material below your actual ability level "to keep your brain working". If you only ever study beginner materials, you'll never advance. Now, this could be a well-designed program with great instruction. It's published by Tsinghua university, and I'll happily vouch for the quality of their Chinese teaching at the 对外汉语文化教学中心 (seems like the course is at least partly run by them as I recognise one of the teachers). But the best instruction in the world won't help you advance if you're just learning the basics of pinyin and how to say "你好" for the 100th time. Why don't you try that Chinese philosophy course you posted in that other thread? 4 Quote
Shelley Posted March 13, 2016 at 02:40 PM Author Report Posted March 13, 2016 at 02:40 PM Yes, your right Demonic_Duck. I am not going to carry on with it. Its interesting that you think you're constantly choosing to study material below your actual ability level Two reasons I am not going to continue is it is very, very slow, and it is absolute beginner level. Also they are not really including characters. They went through the numbers but no characters connected to the course. I hadn't realized how basic it was until I started, but at least now I know I can recommend it to beginners. I am not sure if the Chinese Philosophy course is for me, I suppose I should try and see. I am looking forward to getting back to my NPCR lessons which I stopped while I did the edX course. Quote
