xyz123abc Posted March 17, 2016 at 04:11 PM Report Posted March 17, 2016 at 04:11 PM Is this pronunciation (attached file) popular? I find it very different from the one I am used to (computer generated and online course pods) for instance Mei3 guan shhhhh instead of Mei3 guan1 shi4 or pronouncing chang1 ting1 instead of can1 ting1 EDIT: if you can't play the file, you could change the .mp3 extension to .ogg extension. The forum site didn't allow me to upload as ogg so I just switched it. Thanks! location.mp3 Quote
Hofmann Posted March 17, 2016 at 07:57 PM Report Posted March 17, 2016 at 07:57 PM Quite popular, although I'm not familiar enough with Mandarin accents to locate it. That there is widespread diglossia in China complicates this as one or more speakers may be speaking an interlanguage instead of any particular dialect. Also, you may want to review Pinyin. Quote
Demonic_Duck Posted March 20, 2016 at 02:52 AM Report Posted March 20, 2016 at 02:52 AM Yeah your pinyin is off. Standard would be [cāntīng] and [méi guānxi]. This speaker sounds more like [chāntīng] and [méi guānxx]. In this case, [xx] is just a very unstressed and devoiced [xi]. I wouldn't say it's nonstandard, though the pronunciation of 餐厅 is. Quote
