abcdefg Posted March 22, 2016 at 01:46 AM Report Posted March 22, 2016 at 01:46 AM Bought a new wok recently, as discussed on another thread. http://www.chinese-forums.com/index.php?/topic/51217-wok-and-chopsticks/ The side of the box has some information on the metal from which the wok was made. Here's a snapshot of those two panels. I'm wondering if someone with better reading skills can help me make sense of what the text on these two pictures says. Here's my own inadequate attempt, just to show that, even though I might be a little bit stupid, I am not lazy as well. 高纯度生铁精铸成型,铁质更纯,高含有益人体健康的铁元素;厚底薄壁设计,炒油烟,更健康。 High purity pig iron (raw iron) highly-perfected cast shape, iron character more pure, high content of iron elements that are useful to human body, thick thin wall design, frying soot more healthy. 不锈工艺处理锅身,锅体异常坚硬,耐磨、耐酸硬性能卓越,还到超强不锈的效果 Non-rust industrial arts deals with the pot body exceptionally hard and wear resistant, acid resistant outstanding performance returns to exceeding strength non-rust effect. Thank you in advance for your help. 1 Quote
John18SP Posted March 22, 2016 at 05:17 AM Report Posted March 22, 2016 at 05:17 AM Hi abcdefg, I really like how you try by yourself before asking. Regarding the images, there are a few reading errors before translation. The left image is: 高纯度生铁精铸成型,铁质更纯,富含有益人体健康的铁元素;厚底薄壁设计,少油烟,更健康。 Right image is: 不锈工艺处理锅身,锅体异常坚硬,耐磨、耐酸碱性能卓越,達到超强不锈的效果 Both result in slightly different meanings. Things to note in your translation: 铁质 = 铁的质量 = the quality of iron 富含 = 丰富含有 = rich of 有益人体健康 is more like "healthy for human body", as 有益 = good for, but 有益 could be in many ways. Then It was followed by "人体健康", 人体 = human body, and 健康 = health, so 有益人体健康 could means "good for (human body's) health". "thick thin wall design" ? how could a wall both thick and thin at the same time for 厚底薄壁, 底 = bottom/base, 壁 = wall or the sides of the wok in this case. So the translation could be "thick bottom, thin sides". 少油烟 = less soot ----------------------------- 酸碱 = acid and alkaline, or the PH 耐磨、耐酸碱性能卓越 could be read like this in long: 耐磨性能和耐酸碱性能都卓越, which means "both wear and corrosion resistance have excellence performance" 達到 = reach/achieve Hope this helps! Feel free to ask again if there is any question. Best wishes John SP 1 Quote
coralreef518 Posted March 22, 2016 at 05:19 AM Report Posted March 22, 2016 at 05:19 AM 1.厚底薄壁设计 thick bottom and thin wall design, that means the wok bottom is thicker than wok wall. 2.少(shao3 but not chao3炒)油烟,更健康 less soot, more healthy. as you konw, soot generated when you are frying is harmful to human's health. 3.pot body is processed by non-rust technology(procedure), that makes the pot body extreamly hard, and a pefect performance in wear-resisteance and acid-resistance, 4. 达(da2)到(not 还(huan2)到)超强不锈的效果, to gain an effect (purpose) of highly stainless-ness. 5.富(fu4)含 not 高含 rich in 1 Quote
yueni Posted March 22, 2016 at 05:37 AM Report Posted March 22, 2016 at 05:37 AM 高纯度生铁精铸成型,铁质更纯,富含有益人体健康的铁元素;厚底薄壁设计,少油烟,更健康。 [This wok] is cast out of pure cast iron that has been further purified, and is full of iron that is beneficial for your health. The wok is designed to have a thick base and thinner sides, [resulting] in less smoke [while cooking], and is thus healthier [overall]. 不锈工艺处理锅身,锅体异常坚硬,耐磨、耐酸碱性能卓越,达到超强不锈的效果 The wok has been treated so that it will not rust. The wok itself is very solid, and holds up well against wear and tear and varying acidity levels. All of this results in a very strong anti-rust properties. Note: This is mostly just a quick literal translation, all words in square brackets [] were added by me for clarification. All words that were striked out were in the actual Chinese, but I wouldn't have included them in an actual translation because they seemed quite repetitive to me. 3 Quote

coralreef518 Posted March 23, 2016 at 02:46 AM Report Posted March 23, 2016 at 02:46 AM @abcdefg thanks you! Thick wok bottom with thin wok walls makes sense now. I had struggled to understand that. sorry about that, I had struggled in looking for a appropriate word too, it seems that "side" is much better than "wall". as a senior English learner, I have always been puzzled by this kind of situation. Sometime I just can not figure out the meaning of a sentence, while I kown all the words within it. Quote
