"I still have much to learn"

My online course has the following sentence as the chinese equivalent

 

我要学的还很多

 

Wouldn't it be better to say:

 

我还有学得很多

 

or 

 

我还要学的很多

My guess is: the suggested sentence follows the 'topic + comment' sentence pattern, which is often more natural in Chinese:

 

topic: the studying that I want to do: 我要学的

+

comment: is (still) a lot: 还很多

No. Rather than trying to translate too literally from English (or Spanish if that is your native language), it would be better to familiarize yourself with the structure of the Chinese language.

This is a good example of what is often referred to as a topic comment sentence. First the topic is established, and then a comment about the topic is made.

Here the topic is 我要学的. 要 means "have to do". 我要学 means "I have to learn". By adding 的 at the end, we nominalise the phrase, essentially giving "what I have to learn/that which I have to learn". So now we're going to comment on the topic "what I have to learn" - there is still a lot. 还 means "still". You don't need to translate "there is" which is 有, but if you want to include it, then remember that in Chinese, one says 还有 "still there is", and not 有还. 很多 means "a lot". So 我要学的还很多 - (as for) what I have to learn, (there is) still a lot.

I would also suggest that you try preserving the word order when "translating" to English. I started doing this a while ago and have found that I am making better progress with grammar and understanding the chinese way of constructing sentences.

 

I realised that I am not learning to be a translator, I am learning chinese.

Thanks for pointing out that 的. I was having trouble figuring out it's function in this sentence. It won't cause me trouble from now on! (hopefully)

Like learning Chinese itself, if there's something your brain can't do yet, it can learn to do it by repeated exposure.
