Placing 代替 in a sentence.

So I'm new to studying Mandarin and I wondered how I should place "instead" in a sentence like this; "today I should have studied physics, but I should have studied math instead." Would it be placed something like this?

我今天该学习了物理学， 可是我 “代替” 学习了数学。
