murrayspeaks Posted April 15, 2016 at 07:28 PM Report Posted April 15, 2016 at 07:28 PM Hi, would somebody care to suggest the best way to travel from from Beijing Railway Station to Tsinghua University? Thanks Quote
Demonic_Duck Posted April 15, 2016 at 11:13 PM Report Posted April 15, 2016 at 11:13 PM Google maps and 百度地图 both recommend taking the subway from 北京站 Beijing Railway Station to 西直门 Xizhimen (line 2), then from 西直门 to 圆明园 Yuanmingyuan (line 4). For some reason Google calculates the time needed as 1 hour 9 minutes, whereas Baidu calculates it as only 50 minutes. Quote
imron Posted April 15, 2016 at 11:23 PM Report Posted April 15, 2016 at 11:23 PM Not sure I'd agree with that, but Tsinghua is pretty huge so that route might make sense if you want to end up at the back end of the campus (to head off a future question, OP, I'm not sure where the astrophysics department is located). Personally I would have taken line 2 to Xizhimen and then line 13 to Wudaokao, and walked from there to the East gate (ironically located at the southern end of campus). Quote
889 Posted April 16, 2016 at 12:38 AM Report Posted April 16, 2016 at 12:38 AM If you've got lots of luggage you'll probably just want to take a taxi. The Metro in Beijing is crowded and uncomfortable, especially at the train stations, and there's lots of meandering involved. 1 Quote

大块头 Posted April 18, 2016 at 01:16 AM Report Posted April 18, 2016 at 01:16 AM You may be much better off just getting a taxi, especially if you have luggage. The Beijing subway system has English-language signage and ticket vending systems, but riding it the first time can be stressful (especially if there are crowds). Getting a taxi may be a bit slower if there's traffic, but according to Baidu Maps it should only cost you about 60 RMB. The taxi drivers won't be able to speak English, so print out your destination address in Chinese to give them. The taxis depart from an officially designated taxi stand. Ignore any touts who approach you offering a ride - they will rip you off. Quote
roddy Posted April 18, 2016 at 01:36 PM Report Posted April 18, 2016 at 01:36 PM Murray, please do specify that you're only doing research for a book, and show some attempt to have answered the question for yourself. Again, first page of Google results for 'Beijing Railway Station to Tsinghua' 1 Quote
murrayspeaks Posted April 18, 2016 at 03:01 PM Author Report Posted April 18, 2016 at 03:01 PM I could perhaps found that information from google but that would not have told me what the best way to travel is, taxi, bus or some other means and really the only way to answer that is from personal experience. Quote
roddy Posted April 18, 2016 at 03:22 PM Report Posted April 18, 2016 at 03:22 PM No, it's not, the only way to answer that is by knowing how much time, money and luggage you have. There's no 'best' way. Quote
murrayspeaks Posted April 18, 2016 at 03:25 PM Author Report Posted April 18, 2016 at 03:25 PM Well that answers given here provided sufficient information and information that I could not have gleaned from google Quote
murrayspeaks Posted April 18, 2016 at 03:27 PM Author Report Posted April 18, 2016 at 03:27 PM You see without knowing how much luggage I have still respondents can give conditional answers, as for example that given by 大块头 Quote
roddy Posted April 18, 2016 at 03:28 PM Report Posted April 18, 2016 at 03:28 PM I know. But it would be polite if you made a bit more effort yourself first, were more specific with your questions, and explained which bits of information were useful and why. murrayspeaks Posted April 18, 2016 at 03:29 PM Author Report Posted April 18, 2016 at 03:29 PM I have also learned from 889 that the metro is crowded and uncomfortable Quote
murrayspeaks Posted April 18, 2016 at 03:31 PM Author Report Posted April 18, 2016 at 03:31 PM And also from Imron that the route given by google is perhaps not the best tube route. Do not assume you know how much research I have done before asking the question here - you do not Quote
roddy Posted April 18, 2016 at 03:32 PM Report Posted April 18, 2016 at 03:32 PM Which, given that you didn't ask "does it make a difference if you have a lot of luggage?" or "is the metro crowded and uncomfortable?" show how much you're relying on the goodwill of the members and not on your own brainpower.
