Tourist visas - itinerary vs invite from Chinese friend

It seems an invitation letter from a Chinese friend can be used to support a tourist visa application. Perhaps people who've done/tried this could chip in, mentioning:

  • how it went
  • what other docs were required
  • when/where they applied
  • etc?
