hag629x Posted April 30, 2016 at 11:33 PM Report Posted April 30, 2016 at 11:33 PM I am searching for a Chinese - English - Chinese medical dictionary at e.g. nurse's level but have not been able to identify any using Amazon, Google etc. There are several comprehensive dictionaries available but I am looking for something simpler (and smaller, thinner etc. that easily fits in a bookbag). Further, I'd like it to use simplified characters and include pinyin for pronounciation. Does anyone know of any such dictionary`? 1 Quote
Shelley Posted May 1, 2016 at 11:19 AM Report Posted May 1, 2016 at 11:19 AM If you are looking for a chinese medicine dictionary, Pleco do one that you can add to the basic program. Have a look here for full details http://www.pleco.com/products/pleco-for-android/pricing/ I am not sure about the details of the dictionary ie is simplified and does it include pinyin? I can't find out too much about it. Maybe have a look at the Pleco forum to answer these questions. This will require a smart phone and Pleco to run but it will be small enough to fit in a book bag I might have got the wrong idea as to want you want, but it might be worth a look. 1 Quote
mikelove Posted May 1, 2016 at 02:26 PM Report Posted May 1, 2016 at 02:26 PM It is simplified, it includes Pinyin for C-E but not for E-C. (but you can tap on a Chinese word in E-C to pop up Pinyin from C-E in most cases) Based on the Yatsen Chinese-English + English-Chinese medical dictionaries from FLTRP. 3 Quote
hag629x Posted May 1, 2016 at 11:45 PM Author Report Posted May 1, 2016 at 11:45 PM I already have Pleco but I am looking for a book. The Yatsen English-Chinese Chinese-English Medical Dictionary(中山英汉汉英医学词典, Price: ¥169, ISBN: 978-7-5600-7211-1) sounds interesting and I also found Chinese-English/English-Chinese Clinical Vocabulary Handbook of Practical Medical Chinese (汉英·英汉实用医学汉语临床词汇手册, Price: ¥46, ISBN: 978-7-5135-0012- at the same FTLRP website. Unfortunately I cannot look "inside" either book to see if the are worth buying. Ideally, however, at this stage I want something simpler - rather than the 130,000 terms in the Yatsen dictionary I would be happy getting started with the 250 most common medical terms... I have seen Bailliere's Nurses' Dictionary (Kasner & Tindall), 20th edition that somebody had bought in Taiwan. It is small but is only Chinese - English and uses traditional characters, not simplified characters, and is a bit dated. Amazingly I have not been able to find a source for this book among the usual suspects - Amazon etc. 1 Quote
陳德聰 Posted May 2, 2016 at 10:32 AM Report Posted May 2, 2016 at 10:32 AM I have found medical dictionaries to be a pain in the ass so if you find one that you are satisfied with in the end, please tell. Quote
hag629x Posted May 2, 2016 at 12:38 PM Author Report Posted May 2, 2016 at 12:38 PM I'd like to believe a dictionary matching my needs does exist but it may not be available in the US, nor may I be able to find it from here. The best bet would probably be to go to a bookstore in Beijing selling medical literature. I have a friend going to China in a few weeks and will ask her to look. In the meantime, if someone has a suggestion it would be greatly appreciated, as would comments on the three books mentioned in my previous post. Or, if there is an internet resource with a downloadable medical dictionary with the most common e.g. 250 - 500 medical terms I could use that as a starting point. I found a nice English - Spanish - English medical dictionary one at a website belonging to the Canadian government as part of their multilingual effort but unfortunately did not find a Chinese version... I have already called the bookstores serving NYU and Cornell Medical School students in NYC without luck, as well as a large Barnes & Noble bookstore and the Strand bookstore, also in NYC. Quote
mikelove Posted May 2, 2016 at 01:52 PM Report Posted May 2, 2016 at 01:52 PM We offer a bunch of demo entries from the dictionary in our app, with pretty much the identical text to the printed one, so even if you're only interested in getting the actual dictionary in print format you could download the Pleco demo and see if the content meets your needs :-) (just download it in "Add-ons," then go into Settings / Manage Dictionaries / select each dictionary / tap Browse to review entries from it) Quote
hag629x Posted May 4, 2016 at 05:52 PM Author Report Posted May 4, 2016 at 05:52 PM A Chinese friend of mine, living in the US, found this book at www.pmphmall.com: 汉英医学小词典 (¥15.00, 王深明、王晓鹰 , ISBN 7-117-08198-8/R·8199, 读者对象 医学生 , 出版日期 2007-02-07,出版社 人民卫生出版社 )The pocket size and the fact that it contains no more than 10,000 terms sounds good. Is anyone familiar with and can tell me if it also contains pinyin pronounciations? Thank you. Quote
