Unlocking T-Mobile phones - Public Service Announcement

Hi all. So I was figuring out how to get my Motorola V-300 unlocked so I could use it in China. I found many websites that offered to do this for a fee (generally from $25-beyond; more expensive through European services).

In case anyone else in the future is on a T-Mobile plan and needs a phone unlocked, you can go ahead and call T-Mobile (611 in the US) and within 24 hours they will send you, FREE, an unlock code and instructions on how to use it. I suspect this may only work with one extra SIM at a time (IE, you could need more codes if you're using more than one extra service--they call it "SIM unlocking" rather than "device unlocking"), but for most people, this should do the trick.
