wrbt Posted July 12, 2005 at 08:43 PM Report Posted July 12, 2005 at 08:43 PM One can find lots of material to practice grammar patterns, character recognition, vocabulary, etc. but if one is (attempting to) learn a foreign language and doesn't have the opportunity for immersion it's quite difficult to get meaningful conversation practice. I can listen to a native Chinese speaker, know every single word they're saying, but not catch it because they flow together too fast and I'm not good enogh to anticipate meanings from context yet. I'll be lost but when they repeat slowly enough times I'm sitting there going "ohhh THAT xian" etc. I'd love to get my hands on volumes of recorded conversations from native speakers with an accompanying written (or audio) translation. It appears the closest thing is FSI but man that's much money. I like the format of the Living Language audio stuff, multiply that by 20 and we're there. Quote
