Gune Posted June 27, 2016 at 12:17 PM Report Posted June 27, 2016 at 12:17 PM Hey guys. So I've gotten pretty far with vocabulary and pronunciation, just about to finish NPCR 3. But I am struggling making sentences myself on the fly, specifically I keep forgetting word order and structure. So instead of going through all 3 NPCR books again, are there any grammar books you know of that outlines sentence structures in a good way? From basic to advanced. Thanks! Stefan. Quote

stapler Posted June 27, 2016 at 11:23 PM Report Posted June 27, 2016 at 11:23 PM "But I am struggling making sentences myself on the fly, specifically I keep forgetting word order and structure" I won't recommend any specific book because basically every Chinese grammar book out there will begin by explaining word order. I'm just replying to tell you that reading about how Chinese word order works won't translate into you being able to "make sentences on the fly", or do them correctly. This only comes from experience and practice. This isn't to say you shouldn't read up on it, but if your goal is - as i infer from above - to be able to make sentences on the fly and to gain an intuitive grasp of word order - the only solution is to read more and listen more. 1 Quote
Gune Posted June 27, 2016 at 11:27 PM Author Report Posted June 27, 2016 at 11:27 PM I'll check that word order link thanks! On listening, I'll try to listen to more media, thanks! Quote
lechuan Posted June 28, 2016 at 02:20 PM Report Posted June 28, 2016 at 02:20 PM I also like the Structures of Mandarin Chinese for Speakers of English Series. Each chapter is about 3-5 pages, covers one sentence structure, and then goes over a lot of examples and exercises to practice the structure (with answers in the back). Quote
BanZhiYun Posted June 29, 2016 at 04:40 PM Report Posted June 29, 2016 at 04:40 PM 《现代汉语常用句式》, you should look for it in 旧书店. It's amazing. It's HS level, written in a very, very simple language. It's basically my babe. 1 Quote

BanZhiYun Posted June 29, 2016 at 04:50 PM Report Posted June 29, 2016 at 04:50 PM HS = High School, my bad. What's the full name for YUFA? I realized most textbooks for foreigners are written WAY too complicated without enough explanation(e.g.: 修饰名词性词语, hello. Then, for a beginner, what the hell is 名词性词语?No explanation. There are 6 types of 名词性词语: 名词、替代名词的代词、定中式偏正短语、名词性并列短语、”的“字句短语、复指短语[e.g. 他这个人]) They have everything in this book. Absolutely love it. Quote
BanZhiYun Posted June 29, 2016 at 05:11 PM Report Posted June 29, 2016 at 05:11 PM Oh, it is called "Yufa!", I just found it on Yahoo. Hope it's useful! Looking forward to your progress. Quote
Gune Posted June 29, 2016 at 05:53 PM Author Report Posted June 29, 2016 at 05:53 PM Hehe it's alright so far. I have gotten to the end of the third New Practical Chinese Reader so even if I don't know *everything* being said, I can manage. It's just grammar I am lacking. 1 Quote
