zenwizard Posted July 15, 2005 at 11:49 PM Report Posted July 15, 2005 at 11:49 PM I have a cd from which I am trying to learn mandarin. On it, is says: [How do you say] What does that mean? (qing3 gen1 zhe4 shuo1)... shen2me yi4si I am not sure what "qing3 gen1 zhe4 shuo1" means. I am guessing this means something like "please, with this, say"... But that doesn't really make sense in the context it is presented. Can anyone tell me what it really means? Thanks. Quote

nipponman Posted July 17, 2005 at 01:25 PM Report Posted July 17, 2005 at 01:25 PM It means: "please read after me!" How can that be when shuo1 obviously means to speak? I don't get how gen1 zhe4 means "After me[he/she/it]" instead of "with me[he/she/it]".nipponman Quote
skylee Posted July 17, 2005 at 01:38 PM Report Posted July 17, 2005 at 01:38 PM I don't get how gen1 zhe4 means "After me[he/she/it]" instead of "with me[he/she/it']". I think "after" (gen1 zhe) here means "after the manner of". For "with", I think it would have been "gen1 wo3 yi1qi3". Quote
laohu489 Posted July 19, 2005 at 02:24 AM Report Posted July 19, 2005 at 02:24 AM To transliterate the following 请跟着说 (qing3 gen1 zhe4 shou1) would be "please follow say" where zhe4 is used to indicate that the action is lasting or more than a brief instant. Quote
