The Ministry of Education of the Republic of China is providing free Mandarin textbooks in several Southeast Asian languages, plus English (intended for the Philippines):

The textbooks are organised in the typical style of university language courses: Beginner 1&2, Intermediate 1&2, and Advanced 1&2.

It's simply a question of practice and familiarity. Millions of children learn Mandarin characters this way with no difficulty whatsoever. Zhuyin makes for great Ruby characters because it can be written in-line smaller and more legibly than Pinyin, making it easier to focus on the Chinese characters, especially for non-native leaners whose native languages are based on the Latin alphabet.

With only 37 symbols, Bopomofo (Zhùyīn) is fairly easy to learn (mastery within the span of a week). As etm001 mentioned, there are many benefits to using this system, and that list wasn't even exhaustive. Here are some learning tools that I've created to ease your learning process:

The series 'Speak Mandarin in 500/1000 Words' offers simplified ruby characters above the traditional forms, along with Hanyu Pinyin beneath the Zhuyin-annotated characters. Those are free to download from the ROCMOE as well.
