stevenjac Posted August 21, 2016 at 02:23 AM Report Posted August 21, 2016 at 02:23 AM Is "making" a mooncake a still tradition in China? Quote
Kenny同志 Posted August 21, 2016 at 09:54 AM Report Posted August 21, 2016 at 09:54 AM No, we buy mooncakes from shops or supermarkets. 1 Quote
889 Posted August 21, 2016 at 11:20 AM Report Posted August 21, 2016 at 11:20 AM Mooncakes are sort of like Peking Duck: something not normally made at home. Apart from the difficulty of making the stuff, traditionally Chinese homes don't have ovens. Quote
anonymoose Posted August 21, 2016 at 12:15 PM Report Posted August 21, 2016 at 12:15 PM Usually receive them as gifts, and then pass them on as gifts as necessary. Quote
ChTTay Posted August 21, 2016 at 12:44 PM Report Posted August 21, 2016 at 12:44 PM I've had a homemade one and it was way better than the shop ones. I've never had a moon cake I've liked otherwise. I've heard good things about Starbucks moon cakes. Maybe that's because they use more contemporary flavours like chocolate Quote
zhouhaochen Posted August 21, 2016 at 12:53 PM Report Posted August 21, 2016 at 12:53 PM Almost all the moon cakes are bought from shops and I hated them all my life....until one day I was actually given a box of homemade ones. They were outstanding! So unfortunately people buy them from shops and they are poor quality, probably because it is just faster and easier, I however support all efforts to revive the self making concept - the taste is so much better. Unfortunately the guy I got them from two years ago moved away from Beijing Quote
Zeppa Posted August 21, 2016 at 01:38 PM Report Posted August 21, 2016 at 01:38 PM Madame Huang's blog describes how to make moon cakes, one way at least: http://carolynjphillips.blogspot.co.uk/2015/09/its-moon-cake-time.html Quote
lips Posted August 21, 2016 at 02:15 PM Report Posted August 21, 2016 at 02:15 PM Starbucks' "mooncakes" are in name only, like Häagen-Dazs'. 1 Quote

xuefang Posted August 27, 2016 at 07:19 PM Report Posted August 27, 2016 at 07:19 PM In my Chinese family they also buy moon cakes from shops and never make them. It's common to get moon cakes as a gift, on some years you can get a lot of gift packages with moon cakes. During recent years the 冰皮月饼 have been really popular, they are swear and more like a Western dessert with lots of flavors to choose from. Quote
