New Members August Posted August 30, 2016 at 10:49 PM New Members Report Share Posted August 30, 2016 at 10:49 PM I'm putting on an exhibition and some of the artifacts I'm presenting come from late-19th century China. This opium bowl has an engraving that I can't make sense of. I've heard "dwell in memory" and "mark of funerary object", but nothing fits. Lu Posted August 31, 2016 at 02:33 PM Report Share Posted August 31, 2016 at 02:33 PM It looks a bit like 壽 'long life', but the image is rather blurry. Do you have a better picture?
skylee Posted September 1, 2016 at 02:00 AM Report Share Posted September 1, 2016 at 02:00 AM I think it looks like X記(X being the unclear part).
889 Posted September 1, 2016 at 04:20 PM Report Share Posted September 1, 2016 at 04:20 PM I agree, but note that 記 is frequently the last character in the name of Chinese shops and small businesses. Thus this is almost certainly a shop or maker's mark. Look around and you might be able to identify it by finding the same but clearer mark on another piece.
