vellocet Posted September 8, 2016 at 03:49 AM Report Posted September 8, 2016 at 03:49 AM I'm helping a friend with some brochure racks. These will be placed in hotels, restaurants, etc. and hold some brochures. I'd like to put a sticker on the back of the brochure rack that says something like, "When all these are gone, please call XXXXX and the brochures will be replaced." The sticker will be on the back of the rack and only becomes uncovered when all the brochures are gone. I mostly want to avoid a situation where the brochure rack gets emptied fast and then the staff wonders why it's still there, and then starts using it for their own papers, or better yet take it into their office to use. Which has happened before. I asked a Chinese friend and got 当你在贵店里报刊架上的传单和我公司的阅读杂志使用完毕后,请拨:XXXXX. 我们将会及时填补. This seems to me overly personal and requires too much decision on the worker's part. I'd prefer something in the passive voice that doesn't even mention 你 or 我们公司, like, "when these brochures are exhausted, please call XXXXX for replacements." or other suitably stentorian polite command. Doesn't need to be a direct translation, just something that will automatically trigger the impulse in workers to remedy the situation. Quote
Demonic_Duck Posted September 13, 2016 at 02:14 PM Report Posted September 13, 2016 at 02:14 PM What's wrong with simply using the latter half of that?阅读杂志使用完毕后,请拨XXXXX。我们将会及时填补。Don't think there's a good way of making that last bit passive. Plus stating that "we will [do something] has the helpful rhetorical effect of reminding them that the note was written by a real person who would like the action to be carried out. 1 Quote

If you think hotel staff are going to stir themselves to do something when the rack is empty, you're way off base. You place the rack you have the responsibility to see that it's kept stocked. May as well just place a service number there. 1 Quote
Shelley Posted September 14, 2016 at 12:33 PM Report Posted September 14, 2016 at 12:33 PM Or something really simple that doesn't make it seem like a chore. "Empty? Call XXXXXXX" Quote
