Apokryphos Posted July 20, 2005 at 10:31 PM Report Posted July 20, 2005 at 10:31 PM Greetings, I apologize for bothering anyone but I have a term paper due soon, and I can't seem to get any info about it. My paper is suppose to be based on the following essay question: "What are the views, good and bad, held by Chinese on moving?" Are their any rituals or traditions performed when someone moves from/to or within China? Also, what does the inside of a typical Chinese home look like? Pictures anyone? If anyone could please share with me your thoughts and such, I would be most honored. Thanks in advance, Casey Quote
wiley Posted July 21, 2005 at 04:56 AM Report Posted July 21, 2005 at 04:56 AM Well, I would say that in modern China, getting your own house/apartment, is one of the major "status" symbols that say you've "made" it. Owning an apartment is often seen as a prerequisite for marriage (for a man). Folks generally don't like to make their permanent home in a place that someone else has lived before, therefore the relatively stagnant second-hand homes market. There is also an idiom to describe the joy of moving into a new home: 乔迁之喜, so that might support an argument for the "joy of moving in" in modern china. hope this helps, wiley Quote
Apokryphos Posted July 21, 2005 at 05:23 AM Author Report Posted July 21, 2005 at 05:23 AM Thank you very much, that will indeed help...I can't see the characters for some reason... So getting your own new apartment is like "moving on up" into the world?! What about festivities? Do the Modern Chinese hold personal festivals? Firecrackers or dinner or anything? Please forgive my ignorance, I'm fascinated with the culture and people of China. Plus, it helps with my essay... Many thanks for the info, If you have any more your willing to share that would be great. Thanks again, Casey Quote
