querido Posted November 14, 2016 at 04:25 PM Report Posted November 14, 2016 at 04:25 PM I'm just passing this news to you. Wenlin has "exclusive electronic rights" to the coming Bauer Cantonese dictionary and are developing a website for accessing it. The link is to a Kickstarter project but there's a lot more info about what they're planning if you're interested. The service won't be free and I don't know how it will compare to our already well-known Cantonese resources, but I'll look at anything Wenlin related. Edit: ...and I'll also look at anything Pleco related, see below. 1 Quote
mikelove Posted November 30, 2016 at 02:42 PM Report Posted November 30, 2016 at 02:42 PM Update on this: dictionary is also coming to Pleco, and we've added the Pleco version to the Kickstarter as a backer reward. http://www.pleco.com/2016/11/30/abc-cantonese-dictionary-wenlin-kickstarter/ Very excited to take this big step forward in Cantonese dictionaries. (actually the print screenshots don't even fully do this justice - sample data [which I'll be posting some screenshots from soon] is a good bit more detailed) 2 Quote
querido Posted November 30, 2016 at 03:03 PM Author Report Posted November 30, 2016 at 03:03 PM This is my first time participating at Kickstarter. I changed my pledge to include the Pleco version and I look forward to it! :-) EDIT: I look forward to this dictionary coming to Wenlin, on my desktop, above all. But that it is also coming to Pleco is especially convenient too, and happy news. 1 Quote
Naphta Posted December 2, 2016 at 10:34 AM Report Posted December 2, 2016 at 10:34 AM I am not planning to learn Cantonese any time soon and I don't really understand the difference between the online paid version of the dictionary and a offline version like the one is going to work in Pleco. But Wenlin is offering as a backer reward the Wenlin dictionary (49USD) and Wenlin software + the dictionaries bundle (99USD). It is actually a 50% sale like the one offered last year. I don't want to reopen a discussion on Wenlin but I still have some doubts... Does anyone know on how many different computers you can simultaneously install a copy, according to their license agreement? I would also like to try their Wenlinux. Quote
Guest realmayo Posted December 2, 2016 at 11:52 AM Report Posted December 2, 2016 at 11:52 AM I've got Wenlin running on more than one computer. Quote
querido Posted December 14, 2016 at 01:47 PM Author Report Posted December 14, 2016 at 01:47 PM The Kickstarter was successful, with 868 contributors. Quote
querido Posted April 5, 2017 at 10:46 PM Author Report Posted April 5, 2017 at 10:46 PM I'm waiting patiently. Has anyone heard anything? Quote
mikelove Posted April 6, 2017 at 02:50 AM Report Posted April 6, 2017 at 02:50 AM Last official update was on 2/28. (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/wenlin/wenlin-abc-cantonese-dictionary-website-ed-robert/posts/1818680) Wait is really just on the website, though - my understanding is that the dictionary itself has been done for a while now, but they don't want to go public with it until they have the means to distribute it widely / do useful things with feedback / etc. Here's an early Pleco screenshot, though we're planning to put the characters above the Jyutping in example sentences in the finished version. querido Posted April 6, 2017 at 03:17 PM Author Report Posted April 6, 2017 at 03:17 PM Thank you. It looks great. 12 hours ago, mikelove said: though we're planning to put the characters above the Jyutping Yeah, thanks. Quote
querido Posted May 3, 2017 at 10:53 AM Author Report Posted May 3, 2017 at 10:53 AM I bought something on Amazon for the first time in some months and finally paid to renew my Prime membership for this reason. Well, "wouldn't you know it", as they say, for the first time ever the item was lost or stolen in the mail, I guess. But the good news is that now, day by day, the evidence grows that I can actually live without it anyway, eh? Quote
Luxi Posted May 3, 2017 at 12:56 PM Report Posted May 3, 2017 at 12:56 PM @querido, Amazon are very good at replacing items lost in the mail. Contact their Support services through the website. Quote
mikelove Posted May 3, 2017 at 01:42 PM Report Posted May 3, 2017 at 01:42 PM The dictionary is done and they're beta-testing the Wiki (which works quite well) - from our end we're just waiting for them to launch it officially and then we'll be able to tell you exactly when it's coming to Pleco. querido Posted May 3, 2017 at 07:08 PM Author Report Posted May 3, 2017 at 07:08 PM Thank you for the update, mikelove. To Luxi: Oh, I'm sure. I'll wait about two more days. Ok, byebye to the thread until next month, maybe! :-) Quote
querido Posted May 11, 2017 at 12:39 PM Author Report Posted May 11, 2017 at 12:39 PM Ok! It's up now for those who participated in the kickstarter! I'm in! As I have "lived with" Wenlin, Cantodict, Pleco (which will get this dictionary as soon as they can) and chinese-forums, I hope this new site makes the grade too, and I'm sure it will! Quote
mikelove Posted May 11, 2017 at 02:39 PM Report Posted May 11, 2017 at 02:39 PM Great! We'll release it exactly 30 days after it goes on sale to the general public. (which it hasn't yet, sadly - this is a Kickstarter-only release) Quote
