geek_frappa Posted July 21, 2005 at 02:57 AM Report Posted July 21, 2005 at 02:57 AM In America, if you drop food on the floor, it's technically not dirty for 5 seconds. it's called the 5-second rule. .... in China, they say .. 吃了沒病 ... when food falls on the floor does Chinese also have the 5-second rule? YesterdayOnceMore Posted July 21, 2005 at 03:41 AM Report Posted July 21, 2005 at 03:41 AM wow~~ , Before I read your thread, I didn't know the 5-second rule for dropped food. There's an equivalent expression in my hometown--- 不干不净,吃了没病. hehe... Maybe they have know the technical theory potentially? Quote
Gary Soup Posted July 21, 2005 at 05:22 AM Report Posted July 21, 2005 at 05:22 AM Where did you hear that? I don't know of any such "rule". Quote
Yuchi Posted July 21, 2005 at 05:25 AM Report Posted July 21, 2005 at 05:25 AM Where did you hear that? I don't know of any such "rule". It's not even a rule and is sometimes 3 seconds instead of 5. I don't know if it exists outside of the US, I learned it growing up in the US from other students (though I never adopted it, thank goodness). Quote
gato Posted July 21, 2005 at 05:40 AM Report Posted July 21, 2005 at 05:40 AM http://www.waff.com/Global/story.asp?S=1483067 Researchers say the 5-Second Rule probably only applies to tile and hardwood floors. Food Science Professor Peter Blaschek said, "I think all bets are off when you're talking about something like carpeting. That's an entirely different story and we haven't done that study yet." Quote
johnmck Posted July 21, 2005 at 08:47 AM Report Posted July 21, 2005 at 08:47 AM The five second rule only seems to exist in North America, I guess your floors are cleaner than those in Europe. John. Quote
roddy Posted July 21, 2005 at 10:39 AM Report Posted July 21, 2005 at 10:39 AM I only heard about the 5 second rule in China, and I'd thought it was specifically to help out those of us who hadn't quite mastered chopsticks yet. Quote
